What are they, what are they for, how do they work, and how are they used? I have heard a few times of them (or "sweating", but never really knew what was up! Something to do with lame horses I think??? Thanks in advance!

Sweat wraps are used to draw swelling out of the leg. Also, it will help harden the tendons. I usually slather furazon on, put plastic wrap over it, then polo wrap and leave it on for 12 hours. |

DMSO works great for drawing swelling out of a swollen leg. You can use it with or without a wrap. I prefer to wrap.

There are several types of sweat alcohol can be a "cold" sweat, I also use furazon, DMSO and even glycerin oil. I use mine for taking swelling out and tightening up legs (but not too tight or you will blow a leg out) I have some older horses that after riding/training I put a sweat on them. I put my ointment on, wrap saran wrap, and then put a standing bandage on, or for a lesser sweat, put the quilt on, then the saran and then the bandage. Just be careful putting saran wrap on the leg directly, not too tight. |

sweat wraps are also used to help trim up a horse- ie necksweats. these 'sweatwraps' are either neoprean, or a poly type of material that covers the targeted area, such as the throatlatch, the neck, shoulders, or i've even seen whole body ones (though i don't understand why anyone would use those)... basically it gets rid of excess fat in the areas by generating heat and causing the horse to sweat. They're best used after a light workout session, and you can buy products to increase the sweating as well (or the original listerine works well too).
