1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate. THANK YOU! This is for a college research paper I am doing on the growing population of unwanted off-the-track thoroughbreds.

1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? Yes. 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? Not sure about specifically TBs, but yes. 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? Very light work at 3. 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. Right now, definately not. Down the road, possibly in 10 or more years, if I had my own property and the horse needed a home/rescue/could be lightly ridden (walk/trot?), then yes, I probably would. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate. I own a OTTB. Do you mean by successful that they were successful on the track, or are successful now? If by the first one, that they were successful on the track, then no. My horse lost the only race he was in. If you mean successful now, had he had the proper training before I got him, he would be amazing. But due to improper training, I'm retraining him, but he's doing really well. Goodluck! |

Thanks, and for anyone wondering I meant specifically successful once they were off the track. I am looking for evidence that OTTBs can make great show/riding horses (with proper training of course) after their racing career has finished. Thanks once again for doing this! I need 30-50 responses so I have my fingers crossed!

1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? Yes 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? I think that horses are just overbred in general I do not think it's particularly just TBs. 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? I think it depends on the horse. Generally aim for 2 and a half. 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. I would purchase a horse with soundness issues. Depending on what the horse was physically able to do without hurting itself I would do. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate. I know of a couple off the track TBs and they're great. I have heard some are a little on the crazy side. But the ones that people put the time and effort into them they do great. I'd love to see your paper when you're all finished I wrote a paper on TBs and how often they're just thrown away once they get hurt. I hope you do well on it. |

1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? yes! 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? not specifically TB's...but all horses, TB's included. i'm sure the racing industry puts lots of later unwanted horses on the ground. 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? lightly start at 2 years, really start at 3-3.5 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. No, unless my intended purpose was as a pet/pasture buddy. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate. My horse is an OTTB now doing hunter/jumper/eventing, and many of my trainer's horses and friends' horses have been successful OTTB's as well.

1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? Yes...very much so. 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? I do, a lot of horse's are bred to race, and are being tossed aside if they arn't fast enough. They I belive are a large part of the unwanted horse population, and are most common at the auction. 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? 3-4, I wouldn't start any younger, and at three I would do flat only, 4 light maybe light jumping if their knees are closing. 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. Probably not. unless i was doing only flat or as a pasture buddy. I wouldn't take the chance. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate. I rode a OTTB who was bred at Belmont, but was slow. She was an amazing hunter/jumper, and jumped 4' at one point. She was a great horse and won almost every class she was in. There are also some OTTB at the barn I ride at who have really successful on the local and rated hunter/jumper circut.

1.) In your opinion, is there a problem with overpopulation in the equine world today? Yes 2.) Do you believe that horses, specifically Thoroughbreds, are being overbred? I believe that all types of horse are being overbred not just one specific breed. 3.) At what age do you believe it is responsible to be training a young horse under saddle? It all depends on the horse. We just started a mare at 2 1/2 and she doing great. As long as they are there physically and mentally. 4.) Would you ever purchase a horse with known soundness issues (short or long term) that have resulted from injury? If so, please provide a brief description of the circumstances you would consider this and the intended purpose of the animal. Yep, If it was long term, I would consider a purchase but I might not. If it was short term and fixable, yes I would. 5.) Do you personally know or work with any successful off-the-track thoroughbreds? If so, please elaborate There is a 10 yr old girl in my 4-h group that has succesfully ridden a ottb. Her grandparents are very into racing and she has had several ottbs.
