Suggestions To Stop Chewing Please

My 2 year old chews on everything.....metal rails, buckets, halters/leads AS you're trying to put them on, even occasionally tries clothes until he gets a smack. So VERY stubborn....

I have been tying all of them separately to try to break a horrible herdbound situation.....which seems to be going fairly well.

Tying Desi is so frustrating. He immediately starts chewing on the rope or clasp. Last night I slathered on so much dish soap you could smell it from a few feet away. It wasn't long before he had it in his mouth anyway. I put more on, and it still didn't stop him. I put on this awful stuff I bought just for this purpose, and he was still chewing happily. I don't want to make him sick with all this stuff.

I know he is a baby and is teething, but he would chew up and destroy every lead I have if I let him. Any other suggestions on what I could put on to keep it out of his mouth ? I was thinking WD-40, but was leery it would make him sick if he ignored the smell....

Introduce him to a noseband. Tie his mouth shut.

get the teeth checked and floated, , they are alot worse if they have sores or caps coming off,

keep him busy, if you stand in one place too long, the mouth gets busy.. keep his feet busy and he wont have time to ruin stuffbut if he grabs and chews alot, you can run a rope thru a garden hose, so he gets the hose instead, keep him turned out, if hes in a stall, you can hit and tie his mouth all you want.. he will just get head shy and starting tossing his head, and still keep chewing... young horses are like that.. give him ball or something to mess with inbetween. But keeping his mouth comfortable is the most effective ...

He is out 24/7, but this mouthiness is with everything that comes within reach. Trying to put on his halter means having to pull it out of his mouth a couple of times before getting it past his muzzle. He is a quick little b*gger.....

Giving him tying lessons, even for short periods, means having to yell over at him or putting something on the rope so he doesn't chew through it. Last night he was close to chewing through some very course rope that should have been uncomfortable to mouth....but he didn't seem to notice

have his teeth been checked ?

run a hose over the rope then , if you are going to correct him- dont play games with him, crack him good and make it enough to scare him.. but its dangerous to do it while they are tied,, so if he is mouthing things, or you for that matter, lead him and stand, if he starts , crack him a good shot wtih a wide end crop no more then three seconds , then ignore him, dont play tug of war and yank stuff-- you are joining the game doing that, keep the first session short and when he is standing quiet for a few minutes, end it there ,and put him back out..
