Question suggestions for a beginner please

Since I'm looking right now I have been pressured by well meaning friends to get a walker because they are smooth but my best friend disagrees. She insists I should get a Qhorse because in her opinion they are easier to control and slower.Problem is, all of hers I've ridden have been uncomfortable rides (she'll tell you the same about them )

She says it's possible to get one that isn't uncomfortable to ride like hers but my experience is limited.
Does anyone have any suggestions on breed, size, age, sex etc for me as I am a short(5'2") beginner with arthritis in my neck so I need a safe smooth horse to trail ride.
Thanks,Sherry

That's odd about your friend having mostly uncomfortable QH's- usually they are very smooth to ride. A walker sounds like it would be a good choice for you too. Most importantly, if you are a beginner is to get something which has experience. Don't buy something really young which needs further training. Just search around for an easy going, safe trail horse and try as many horses out as possible. Most important factors in buying a horse are making sure conformation is suitable for what you want, well-trained, and temperament is suitable to your own. Go out and look at as many as possible and make sure to get a vet check done before purchase.

I'm located between Bloomington and Peoria area. I guess I should clarify about her horses. One is pretty old and doesn't ride smooth because shes grumpy and makes riding a pain lol Her other one has a very hard trot, no matter how well you try or how experieinced you are she just beats ya to death!!
The other one is a 17 y/o who is sweet as can be but jumps every ditch small hill etc and trots constantly no matter how much you ask him to walk
Her horses I've rode more than any other which is why I say my experience has been limited. The walkers I have been riding are sweet natured and definitely easy on the neck but being a beginner I think they are wrong for me right now because they are all about 6 y/o and very fast gaited.

I looked at a very docile QH/Morgan cross today that the girl said was 14-1 or 14_2, small guy but maybe my speed. Not ridden since last fall, same owner last 9 years,is 13. Only problem I saw was he was not groomed recently and looked a little shabby because the owner went off to college and mom can't care for it.Anyone know anything about a cross like that as far as disposition etc.?

BREED DOES NOT MATTER!!! in most cases. in every breed there is the total oposite of the breed discription. u could find the most down to earth Arab and the most spirited draft horse.(tho i dont kno much of draft breeds. i'm basing this on the warmblood, hot blood, coldblood thing) look around at experienced horses. no matter wut breed. if its got the miles and temperment thats perfect for u go for it.

I agree with bay_blnd jmpr07. Don't be biased on your choice just because of the breed!!! The breed doesn't matter, it's how the horse acts and how comfortable you are witht he horse.

me 2 i agree.. in a general case, if you were to get on a horse without knowing anything about it's breeding, you wouldn't be able to tell which breed it is.. NORMALLY, because i know there are some cases, but even then, i know some really slow TBs and some really fast OLD qhs! if i were you, i'd just try horses and see what's best for you, good luck in finding the perfect horse for you!;-)

Breeds shouldn't matter, but I do love my Standardbreds!! They are a comfortable horse to ride, the pace is smooth side to side motion. But most imprtant is training and personality. Any breed will have its quirky members and age doesn't always mean much, I have a 3yo standard that acts like shes 20, very calm, bombproof, except on racenight!! Than shes a handful, but other than that, a real doll. So maybe a young horse will be just as good, just keep looking and trying lots of different horses.
