Sugar in the Classroom

I am taking an education class right now. We talk about different debates, and this came up the other day. I thought it was interesting.

Do you guys think Sugar should be allowed in the classroom?

- In my opinion, Yes. I think even though some kids have obesity issues/diabtetes, sugar is not a bad treat once and while. If the teacher is bringing in goodies for the kids, she can also bring in something else if the child is diabetic. When children celebrate their birthday in the classroom, for some students it is the only celebration they would get. One cupcake here and there in my opinion wouldn't hurt.

I think that it very much depends on the situation. If it's a birthday party... sometimes kids are allowed to bring a couple "goodies" to give to their friends, or to their entire classroom.

If someone was doing a demonstration of "cooking" something, like say... chocolate chip cookies... then yeah... he'd bring some cookies into class to share.

But I don't think that a teacher should bring sugar into class unless it's for a special occasion or as a reward (like... everyone in the class got an A on a hard test).

Sugar in a classroom as a reward WILL NOT cause obesity. Parents who allow children to eat it all the time can lead to it though. So yes, I had sugar in school, and my kids can too. It is (will be ) our responsibility as parents to monitor intake.

Exactly. We don't eat a lot of sugar at our home, because we all like greasy junk food better than sugary junk food. So when we do have sugar it is a special treat.

I know my mom would have a problem if sugar was a regular thing at school - she doesn't like me eating much of it because my family is very prone to dental issues that not eating sugar helps prevent. But if it was a reward? I'm sure she wouldn't have a problem with it.

I agree. I read an article the other day saying sugar in the classroom caused Obesity.

Even if sugar was not allowed, kids would find someway to bring it in.

It just seems silly to me to ban sugar. That just sounds really hard to do to me.

I think that in moderation it is fine and i had cupcakes when i was in school and im not obese or diabetic.

I think that some people are just too sensitive.

I don't think that food should be allowed in the classroom at all. Teachers and other students don't need to use food to share a treat. Whatever happened to things like stickers, paper dolls, and dollar store toys? Perhaps a few extra minutes at recess for the class?

The possibilities for allergies are just endless... and you can be so, so careful- providing "allergen-free" candy or snacks for the kids whose allergies you know about- and still have issues when the child with the allergy feels singled out and eats something s/he shouldn't. Young kids are so funny and sensitive about things that we wouldn't necessarily expect.

But, of course, that's how I feel about younger students. Older kids are a different story IMO (for instance, having to eat a "different" muffin or piece of candy wouldn't prompt them to grab for the "regular" kind to avoid feeling different than the rest of the class).

It's not so much the sugar that causes obesity but Fat! Sure that cake has sugar...but load and loads of fat.

I don't think sugar in the classroom for special occasions is bad.
