![]() | Stud Service Prices? Hello! I'll be leaving for college in the fall and am unable to take my horse with me, but an old friend has offered that I could lease my horse to her (my horse is registered) because she has a stud and could breed her. Does anyone know of the general prices for these sorts of things? I really don't have much experience or knowledge for that matter in the area of breeding horses, so if anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks kate |

| Senior Member+ | Wait, she is leasing your mare? So she is leasing your mare for breeding since she has a stud? Who gets the foal? That is the key to who pays the stud fee usually.

![]() | yes, she will be leasing my mare and she will get the foal, so that means that she would pay me both for the lease of my mare and the foal right? so how much is a reasonable amount that people usually charge for that? |

To lease for the duration of the pregnancy + through weaning? If she is "free leasing" then she won't pay you anything, except in the event your mare dies. You are accepting some of the risk by allowing her to be put into foal. She pays stud fee, she pays any and all feed, vet care, etc for the duration of the lease. She gets the foal. You get nothing for the foal since you aren't paying anything for the foal.

| Senior Member+ | Welcome to HGS!!! I agree with BW. If she is leasing your mare and keeping the foal, then she pays the expenses. It's actually a good option for your situation. Then after your schooling you could get your mare back. If you sold her then she would be gone...

| Full Member | All of the breeding leases I have dealt with the mare owner gets something out of it other than the mare being fed for the year. Usually they get so much a year, every other colt, or some money for every other colt. As the others have stated, get a written lease, and whoever leases the mare pays all the bills for her. I think it all depends on what you want and how well you feel your mare will be cared for while being leased. I would also make sure you address the issue of what happens if the mare doesn't settle, or if they have a foal that dies. Those are 2 issues that cause alot of disagreements in breeding leases. |

| Senior Member+ | It depends on the quality of the mare. Usually I see breeding leases for free with an un-ridable or un-sound mare. If I wanted to lease a sound, sane, world champion mare, I would expect to pay something. If you have a friend that wants to keep her for a year, you are probably going to go with a free breeding lease, where the person leasing would be expected to pay all vet, breeding, and feeding fees, but get to keep the foal at the end, and have to give the mare back. You want a good and specific contract, that addresses what will happen if the other person is not caring for your mare right, when the foal will be weaned, what will happen if she doesn't deliver a live foal, and what will happen if the mare dies in delivery, or any time while she is pregnant. |
