Thanks guys for the warm welcome! I will be sure to post some baby pictures this spring. I have 3 of my own mares bred to him and due late March! Thanks for all the complements. It has been a long road (got him as a baby and been training a long time and working toward these shows and breeding him forever it seems and now it's all finally coming together). Can't wait for foaling & breeding season and next show season!! Keep him in mind if you have any mares to breed.

Your boy definitely appears to be splash white.

It's funny... we were just discussing this particular stallion on another forum. I even said there (before reading this) that he was probably splash.

These are my remarks coped from that forum:

"I'm not even 1/4th through the page and... I ADORE him!!! That may be one of the best looking (he does have some faults, but you know), most well rounded, do everything, and look classy (and ATHLETIC) doing it! WHOA!!! I'm IN LOVE!!!

Plus a dunskin? Can't go wrong. Oh.. and get this, he can only produce bay, buckskin, dun, and dunskin (he is EE AA Crcr Dd).

Oh yeah... and I think he may be splash. Bottom heavy, falls off one side of the face, moustache, etc."

I actually showed him to my husband and told him he made my short list for our two mares.

Jetdecks... I think he may throw splash looking foals to non splash mares. I think this guy has a supressor going on, and if he doesn't pass it, then he could throw some mighty splashy foals. :-)

Thanks for the nice message. That is exciting that you are considering him for breeding to your two mares. Thank you.

Also this whole splash white thing is quite interesting to me. I have never had anyone say anything about it to me regarding him until this forum. Even my friend that's a Ph.D. and teaches several horse genetics classes never mentioned it. So this is new and something to look forward to seeing if it comes out in the foals. His sire doesn't have as much white and has been bred to LOTS of paints and still throws a very high color percentage on them so maybe Buckwheat will too.

What forum were you on that others were talking about him, I'd like to check it out.

Thanks!!

ACC--perhaps! Do you have any links that discuss "supressed" splash white? I am trying to gather as much info as I can on it, since I'm pretty sure both of my mares have it. I am starting to see it everywhere I look... and I am getting the feeling that it is much, much more common than we once thought, but just not usually as obvious as the classic "Gambling Man" markings. I even feel that a lot of horses are assumed to be sabino (white stockings and star/strip/snip or blazes without chin white) are probably splash whites (maybe splash white/sabino combos.) This is solely based on my own observations and a study of the get of Trashadeous, Gunner, and some of Gunner's "obvious" splash sons. (Gotta love APHA Plus... lol I take a gander at the foal, and then a gander at the dam and see what is likely coming from where.) Any-hooooo... the point of all that is "I would love to read about the suppressors you mentioned."

suncolors--I would like to see some of his foals (does he have any yet?) and possibly pictures of his parents... It would be interesting to see if sire or dam (or both) were the possible contributors. Does his sire have a webpage? Please, hook us up!

My husband is a Ph.D. that teaches all sorts of horse related classes, genetics including. He had no clue what splash was until I explained it to him. Except for us color geeks, splash is relatively unknown or not understood.

This is absolutely true. It is FAAARRRR more common than most people realize. That you are seeing it everywhere means it has finally clicked with you what "signs" to look for. My color geeks friends used to say all the time "this horse is splash, that horse is splash". I htought they were crazy. I even posted one time "splash is NOT that common!". WRONG! They quickly corrected me saying that it really is common and that the only ones I saw as splash were considered homozygous splash and that I was completely missing the heterozygous splashes. I can *see* it now, in homozygous or heterozygous forms.

If you guys want I can post some real examples of proven splash in minimal form, maximal form, explain what I see that tells me a horse is splash, etc. etc.

As far as the splash supression... well... it's not just splash. I along with my color geek friends feel there is either a gene or a controller that supresses white. I feel breeds like Friesians and Percherons carry it. Breed a Percheron or a Friesian to a very loudly marked mate and see how minimal the white becomes. Some of us also theorize that ermine spots may be an indication of this supressor. Like the supressor is trying to stop the white on the feet. Eever seen ermines the size of a baseball? I have. I know of a mare with only one area of white on her:

She was bred to a VERY loud stallion that always throws flash. Her foal? Totally solid save for one low sock... full of ermines. Bred the mare to another loud stallion. Resulting foal had moderate white with no ermines. Ever seen a very minimal tobiano? I rarely see one without lots and often big ermines. There is some serious supression going on in the mare above, and she has the capability of passing that supression too. Even with the supressor the offspring are not always supressed though.
