![]() | Stud has trouble penetrating mare My 12 year old stallion is an experienced & patient breeder; he can pasture and hand breed, and has even been collected on a phantom. I have a 5 year old mare who's never been bred. She knows the stallion. I have to tie her and put her in a homemade stock or she runs away and kicks him. In the stock she stands still but is uptight. The problem is he has a lot of trouble penetrating her. I tie her tail back but he just struggles to find the right spot and penetrate. He has been successful a couple of times, but yesterday the poor guy just wore himself out without success. I even tried to help put it in to no avail. I do think she's tensed up so that doesn't help. Anyone have suggestions? |

| Senior Member+ | Try some lubrication? like KY jelly.....has a vet palpated her, to make sure she is not obstructed? Cathy

| Senior Member+ | I'll ask the first and obvious, just in case. I had a lady bring me a mare once and we went to breed her and saw that it obviously was not going to work.... But has she had or does she have a Caslicks in? The mare I mentioned above had, had one taken out years before but a part of it had grown back together and made her 'unbreedable'.

| Senior Member+ | All I have to add to the above is OUCH!! The next question would be how is the mare shaped in the vulva. We had a mare in for breeding whose vulva was tilted slightly up. So he had aim it up and almost bend it down to get it in. Does that make sense? Jessie |

| Senior Member+ | A couple of things come to mind here. First, if the mare has a persistent hymen, it could make it difficult to impossible for the stallion to penetrate. Additionally, never, ever use lubricant on the stallion or mare when breeding live cover. You stand the very real chance of the stallion's penis inadvertently "slipping" and penetrating the rectum. And, unfortunately, once he starts, he probably won't stop breeding and you run the risk of the stallion tearing the mare's rectum. So, lubricant is an absolute no no. Lastly, you say the stallion has been collected. Why not collect the stallion and breed the mare AI? Kathy St.Martin Equine Reproduction Short Courses http://www.equine-reproduction.com |
