Well, alright, don't take this the wrong way at all, I can't really find a way to word it nicely. If you don't know how to put one on, you shouldn't be using one. Reason being, you need to have someone show you how to use it.

I know that Steve has asked questions in the pst about showing his paint, so I am going to go with that is why he is asking, put the chain through the first hole on the left side of the halter, drape it over the nose and pull it through the other side of the hole on the right side of the halter, (lower holes) then you run it up to the top hole on the cheek and snap it. I would def work with your horse with it before going into the show ring, so that he knows that when it is there, it is time to do in hand work, work on setting him up, trotting and backing with it. Use very little pressure, some horses will accept it ok, others will not like it and need to learn that you won't hurt them with it. My 9 year old daughter practices showmanship with my 4 year old horse with a chain, just be gentle with it horse_on

I thought that it was customary to show with the chain under the chin? Also if going over the nose, you have to twist it around the noseband to keep it from falling off the nose.

There are several different ways depending on the individual horse, the discipline you're showing in, the breed association, etc. I'll post pics of each and hopefully somebody else can explain because it takes me forever to type with the cast. lol

This is used for Arabians and Sporthorses

The below pic shows the chain going through the mouth and over the horse's top gum. This is only reserved for totally out-of-control horses. Can't figure out why its allowed at this shows here:

This is acceptable for Stockhorses:

Dawn - for showing you do not twist the chain over the noseband. The silver show halter should be snug enough that the chain will rest directly above it on the nose. You only twist the chain for at-home use with a looser halter.

Steve-Is this for the toby you're getting ready to show at the stockshow? If so, try to get a nice leather lead strap that already has a chain attached to it. Make sure your halter is properly fitted and snug. Then run the chain through the side ring down by his nose, under his chin, back through the other side ring, and then hook it to the top ring on the right side. Hope that's not too confusing.

You're not allowed to twist? That's very interesting. It seems to me that I've seen halter horses with it twisted, but who knows.

The only ones I have seen have been twisted...or I never looked close enough to notice otherwise.

Nope, no twist, Jumpers is correct You can either put the chain over the nose or under the chin, whichever your horse is more accustomed to. Some horses with teh chain under the chin tend to bring the head way up and shake it a lot to get away from the pressure. I have also seen the lip chains which I don't care for at all, but if I am in a class with an un-ruly stallion, or any horse for that matter, I have to admit that I don't mind the handlers doing this if it will keep me and my horse safe.
