Strongid?

I was just wondering how many people have their horses on Strongid? Do you feel it is worth the money every month just in case the horse colics and then the company pays for part of the colic surgery? I am considering putting my gelding on it and was wondering what everyone's views of it was.

I have heard of that program--look at the fine print- usually there is an age cutoff, and a maximum amount of $$ - overall it is a good wormer-I am guessing you mean the Stongid C or Strongid C2X--remember to still rotate for the little booger$ it doesnt get. Dont you also have to purchase the wormer from the vet....Do you know how the price compares to getting it from the store or online?

I heard that Strongid gets rid of the bugs IN the intestine but you should still paste to get rid of them before they have a chance to get there...something like that. I think BW posted about it

Yes, you do have to still rotate paste de-wormers. I have had 2 different vets tell me that the daily de-wormers over time *can* cause liver damage.

My vet thought it might become a source of resistance.....

I am enrolled on the Preventicare Program that Pfizer offers, and I love it. My horses are doing great on the Strongid C2X. My vet sells the product for the same price I can get it in the store, and I have asked him over and over about any new studies on liver damage etc, and there have been no clinical studies that prove that is causes it. He says that it is VERY safe. It is not absorbed, it only passes through, so there is technically no way to cause damage internally. I still paste worm every six months and I have a fecal sample done at my request once a year. The results are better than they were when I was rotating paste wormers.

In my opinion, it is very "worth" it. In fact, I spend less on this program than I did on rotating pastes. So if my horses ever colic, which hopefully they dont, and requier surgery, $5000 will be covered with this plan. To me, that is GREAT.

I use it! It is great stuff! It has to be fed as a daily wormer so if you can't do it daily then it's not a good idea. Think of it as just taking care of that days "worms".
