Strangles?

I recentlly had both my horses vaccinated for strangles. Several barns in our area have an out break. The vaccine was given through the nose. Someone had told me after that, that the vaccine through the nose was not good because it is live bacteria. They can sneeze it out on their stall walls. Does anybody know how long the bacteria can stay alive? If humans can get it? And excatly what is strangles?

stangles is worse than a cold. it's a bacteria.

the barn my horses are boarded at is going through this right now.
it can be life threatning.
we have one horse that isn't doing good at all. he has two holes where puss is coming from. he's constantly laying down. he's in so much pain.
it's something you pretty much have to wait out, and hope for the best.

i hope everything is ok for you.

strangles is a disease where there is a build up of puss in the thorat caused by a bacteria entering from the nose which is contracted through drinkling water which a infected horse has come in contact with.
in most cases the horse will b fine in about a week but a secondary infection which some unluky horses get may kill the animal. Humans cannot contract the deasise, but any horse with it should be kept isolated.
We vaccinate our horses through a needle in their neck. I think that might be more effective then the nose vaccination.
Best of luck with your horses

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine(ACVIM) recently released its consensus statement on guidelines for treatment, control, and prevention of strangles, which is caused by Streptococcus equi. The document was published in the January issue of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicince and can be found online at:
http://www.acvim.org/wwwfp/Consensus.../Strangles.pdf.
Also suggested measures at:
www.TheHorse.com/emag.aspx?id=5524
"Some people think a farm that has had strangles is contamiinated for life, it not. Theres no proof that S. equi last very long, even in the ideal situation(the lab, where it was found it survived for 48-60 days in various temeratures on a variety of surfaces)". "This is not a hardy organism".
