Strangles!!

So, as we were taking pictures for the "too fat" thread, we noticed a lump under Delaware Fox's chin. We think she has strangles. She's not in any distress...she's eating fine and breathing fine. The vet will come up later today, since it's not any emergency. Our other horses have been vaccinated and I called my nearest neighbors to let them know.

My understanding is that for my horses to spread it around, they have to be up close and personal to other horses. So, I'm thinking it's safe for me to trail ride.

Is that true?

Is it just a lump? Generally, Strangles will be a lump oozing with puss. Ok..that's gross!

perhaps your horse is having some issues with his thyroid glands. My tb mare has thyroid issues and you can feel the thyroid glands. Do the lumps have any movement to them? the thyroid almost feels like a little ball that you can easily move from side to side.

Id let her rest. If she has Strangles, thats streptococcus, its Tough stuff. You dont want to Risk spreading it, and your horse will need all its available energy to whip it, if it(horse) gets or to keep it from getting a BAD case. BTDT on a Bad case and its No fun, for horse, barn, or caretaker.

Yes thanks...I've been reading up on strangles also. Of course it could be a swollen gland or something...but it is a hard lump and doesn't move. She's still not in any distress though...so hopefully it wont be awful.

CJ...this isn't the horse I would trail ride. Delaware Fox is the foal...she's only 4 months old. It's my other horse I want to take out on the trail.

First, deep breath in! Now out!

Horses can get swollen glands for a wide range of reasons OTHER then strangels

Elle' had swollen glands last week for 2 days as did Lexi... Now both are totally OK... My vet said it could have been from the stress of our extreme heat wave we had, or from a reaction to something in the field, OR even from the stress of so many flies during the heat wave we had.

Both Lexi and Elle' are 100% fine now, neither had any temp, no signs of any sort other then swollen glands.

So there is a good chance it is NOT strangels, but to be safe, take her temp at the same time every day for the next week and make sure she's not acting off her feed or anything.

very wrong abt spreading it... at my barn the two horse that had it had to be in a WHOLE nother barn and it affects there body they become weak and strangles is airborn.. so even if there not close .. and spreads FAST

but to tell u the truth it doesnt sound like strangles

I have delt with strangles and it isn't fun... I would keep her away from all the others until you know for sure. One sure sign is a snotty nose along with the swollen glands...
