Strange question about heat cycles...

I just recently bought a mare. The lady I bought her from said that when she is in heat she really shows it! Well, she is in heat this week. I know all the normal signs of a mare in heat, but I've noticed something strange about her. I don't know if this is even related to her being in heat or if she's just gotten into something. It just seems strange that I'm noticing this while she's in heat. Anyways, yesterday (Monday) she had this brown sticky stuff all over her back legs and in her tail. It was really gross and I just figured she had gotten into something, but I have no idea what...there's not much for her to get into. So, yesterday I gave her a bath and washed all the sticky stuff off of her. I went out to feed her this evening and there it was again! This sticky brown stuff all down her back legs. Now I'm probably just being a nervous mommy, but has anyone had a mare with an issue like this, or do you think she's just getting into something.......or is there maybe something totally different going on.....

Sounds like she's just a dirty mare. My paint mare gets like that when she's in heat...

It's probably urine. Some mares tend to be more demonstrative than others. And, the consistency of a mare's urine changes as she goes through estrus. Annoying and messy, but certainly nothing to be concerned about.

Hope that helps!

My neighbors mare really showed when she was in heat. You really didn't want to ride behide her if the wind was blowing your way. LOL
