A dear friend of mine boards at a different barn, and she told me that a few months ago there was a mare out there that somehow got her muzzle stuck between her chest and the blanket. (I guess the blanket was not adjusted properly, leaving a big gap up front.) Well, when she realized her nose was "trapped," she spooked herself very badly and really banged herself up in her stall. (Luckily she wasn't outside when it happened.)

The bad thing was Raps got the T hooks of his blanket caught on a catlewire fence.
The funny/ good thing was he got out of it, apparently by backing way up and ducking out forward. I found the blanket in tact, hung up on the fence by the Ts, with the crossed belly surcincles and rear legs straps still On & CLosed.

My poor poor Amber.

Anyone remember Mr.Mom. Ambers rug became her woobie.

At first it was new and strange to her. She thought it made her butt look bigger but after enough convincing she was fine. But blue was just not enough. She started perusing through the catalogs. Sometimes my mail would be missing and I would find it in her stall, her muzzle deep in the Stateline Catalog, demanding different colors and styles. One catalog had a pink rug and she went mad for it. I started getting calls from neighbors at 2:00 am telling me to come get my horse out of their tack room. The rugs were just the beginning. I started finding fly masks of all colors shoved haphazardly under bales of hay. A cinch here, a halter there. It was getting out of control. In the morning I would walk down to the barn and the minute she seen me she would drag her feed tub to the middle of the stall. I was hip to her business. I scolded her and lifted the tub. There, stuck deep in the mud, was Dubies red saddle pad. It was then I knew I had a problem. I had to call EFA (Equine Fashionista Anonymous) It has been a year now and she is clean and fashion free. Thanks to EFA.

Just wanted to give you all a smile.

My dubie won't even go near a blanket. He's scared of them except when Ambers wearing hers. Then he chews it apart!

ahahahah Melissa.... you are tooooo funny !

Well I don't have any horror stories... but Mikeys blanket has like a huge velcro belly strap that's really wide so it keeps his blanket always centered.... and I always do his leg straps up quite a bit.... having a wedgie is better than breaking your neck I always say.......

Unhappy Cuts from rugs

Hi All haven't been on here for ages but I work every day and got a bit lazy taking my rug off my horse, I will never do that again as the rug has been rubbing into his neck and cause a huge chunk of skin to come off my horse, and a cut from where the rug sits.
I was horrified to see it, obviously the rug was a bit too tight as he has a huge wither.
Should have taken a pic of it but It was so gross i couldn't bear to look at it.
I have been cleaning it with disinfectant and hope it gets better quick in the meantime no riding and I am reluctant to put rugs back on.

I will always take rugs off if I ever put them back on.

I do not think there is any significant danger to wearing well fit, properly applied blankets and sheets. I've seen people put size 74 blankets on size 66 horses and never check them and that's just asking for an accident IMO, but well fit blankets are fine and probably even prevent/lessen a lot of kick and bite injuries.

I really think it's unlikely the filly the OP posted was drowned because of her rug/blanket. To waterlog a blanket, a horse would have to walk into water up to/over their chest, and wait for the blanket to start taking on water. But then you have to consider that all the turnout blankets on the market today are made of synthetic materials, which really do not absorb and hold water. (even if they did, a waterlogged blanket really couldn't weigh more than 150lbs tops- which horses can easily carry) It takes a serious dousing/soaking to get moisture through treated fabric, and once in, the filler is synthetic so it's not like they are wearing a big cotton terry towel that fills up and pulls them down. No, I think it's much more likely that poor filly was injured first, or tripped in the water, or any number of other things.
