Okay, but I think we are missing the point here. If no one gets up and says anything- then government will have no reason to look for alternatives. All I'm asking is for people to exercise thier right as Americans and tell government that we do care what happens to these horses...at least they will then TRY to find an appropriate alternative....even if it has to be the lesser of several evils ( I DO agree with Wyldterv that being stuck in holding pens is not a good alternative- even to slaughter)

Maybe all we can do is fight for humane treatment of the horses going to slaughter, but that is still something to stand up and fight for...just because it's "old news" doesn't mean we should shrug our shoulders and walk away.

And BTW, as mentioned below, some of you are getting sick of these threads...well, as was stated the other day, there are TONS of new members who perhaps haven't had their say on the issue.

I really think it is great that you are standing up for something you believe in. However there are already laws protecting the rights of animals being shipped for slaughter. The laws are there. Wether or not they are being enforced is another issue all together. As for the congressman and women doing something different other than allowing these horses POSSIBILITY of going to slaughter they need ideas! We must remeber that the men and women who govern our country most likely aren't horse people. They need input from us. They can't do anything if you just send them a letter saying "stop slaughter" You must give them ideas as well.

CowgirlUp... I commend you on your passion to do SOMETHING for betterment and I agree, if you sit and do absolutely nothing, there is a high likely hood that NOTHING is what will happen and there will be no change.

I have read up on the Birthcontrol testing being done in hores in Australia and in Montana and it is interesting and has possibilities. ONE of the problems with it is the need to frequently capture and vaccinate mares in the herd. Every year new fillies come into sexual maturity and you'll never be able to have every one on the same schedule so that necessitates rounding up the heard yearly, which, besides of cost considerations, it not particularly healthy for the herd putting them through large amounts of stress yearly.

I'm not sure what a good, sound, healthy policy of population control for the Mustangs is in all honesty. I've looked at it from many angles and I try to see it from all sides and I just haven't seen any one good solution to this issue yet.

I think education that is honest and not slanted towards or against the Mustang would be a first good step myself. I'd also like to see the horses that are currently unadoptable PTS as I don't feel we should be in the business of warehousing animals ever, and let's take that money instead and use it towards a good BC program and a good Gov't funded training program of young Mustangs so that people will be more likely to adopt one.

Create a BLM Mustang registry with BLM mustang horse shows so people see some intrinsic, perceived value in owning one as well...

I'm choosing the educational route myself and have been chronicalling all of my 'adventures' and experiences of gentling and training Poncho. This will be sent to my local BLM office and they will use it in materials like pamphelts and websites. They like to find horses that people have actually done some things with (not necessarily shown! but some type of working with them) to show the general public that they can make good saddle mounts.

The Mustang delima is a large one and one that will need a variety of actions to be 'solved' IMO.

Wyldterv- I think you and I are very much on the same page. My main goal with this post (as with many of my posts on such topics) was to get people thinking and educated about the issues. Your posts did a WONDERFUL job of helping us see a bigger picture. In an ideal world there would be no need for slaughter, but I agree 100% that we shouldn't "warehouse" horses (as you put it). Yes, the birth control system would most likely be cost prohibitive as well. There will never be a plan that will make me feel 100% comfortable- some sacrifices will always be made.

What I want from this thread is this: That ALL of you think about what you can do to help, whether it is writing a letter, adopting a mustang or becoming involved with education, fundraising, whatever. My goal here is to prevent us as a society becoming idle and unmotivated to continue having a voice for creatures that don't have one Good luck to all of us...I know I will be writing letters (and perhaps someday I will be in the financial position to adopt a mustang as well!)

To cause one to pause and THINK is always a beneficial action!

From a horse person in the area. She sent a mass email about this.

Honestly, all the horses can not be saved. It would be ludicrous to suggest that to them.

What is the email of the people I have to write to?
