I'll post it again with the letter...and yes, we do have alternatives.... there have been studies using birth control amoung the mares in these feral herds, thus controling the new birth rates.... I know we need to do more then Yell "STOP"...so start posting ideas!

Post Letter of Protest

RE: Wild Horse Slaughter

To Whom It May Concern:

In light of the recent changes in the protection laws regarding Feral horses in the US, I am writing to ask that you petition to have this change reviewed and overturned. Wild horses are part of our natural history and should be cherished, not slaughtered. Horses are not vermin, nor are horses an acceptable food source. The American people will not stand for this type of ludicrous destruction of a gentle and noble creature.

This letter is to serve as my protest against the changing of this law. It is my right as an American to have a say in government policy. I am firmly against the slaughter of wild horses in America and strongly urge you to take a stand in this matter.

Sincerely,

(Insert your name here)

"Bump" Common, I know there are more of you out there that care.... even if you don't agree...we should still try and come up with other alternatives...

All Mustangs haven't lost their protection. It was part of an appropriatians bill its was added, passed and signed by the president. Mustangs, that come under the BLM protection, that are collected that are over 10 years of age and haven't been adopted after three tries can be put up for sale. Yes they can be sold to slaughter houses but they can also be bid on by rescues as well as private individuals. If you want to do something meaningful, adopt a mustang, adopt two or three.

7HL is correct this is 'old news' and has already been signed into law.

I own a BLM Mustang as does Dawn. I am NOT against the new bill in all honesty. I think it is better to put them up for general auction if they go through 3 adoption auctions without anyone wanting them. OTHERWISE they sit in holding places with minimum nutritional care given to them, no shelters, no vet care, etc... This is better then possible slaughter? I don't think so.

I DO believe the Gov't should look more seriously into Mare Birth Control and agree that it might be a better solution PERIOD, even over round up and adoption, in order to keep 'wild (which are really ferral not true wild animals)' horses WILD.

I do like my Mustang, I may adopt another if I ever get Poncho sorted out and fully trained and safe, but I also see how many people adopt them but do NOTHING with them because it is NOT an easy or inexpensive undertaking!

Dawn has spent TONS of money getting Reno healthy adn I've spent TONS of money working on getting Poncho safely gentled and trained (luckily he's a pretty easy keeper and so far so healthy!~!!)... I've spent almost $3,000 in training expenses since Mid July on a horse I spent $125 for and I STILL can't just get on him and ride down the trails! How many people, realisitically, will go to that much trouble and expense?
