Tho some people may be uncomfortable with the fact that horses are dieng, there is nothing wrong with this. It is no different then beef, deer meat, pork, chicken, etc.
Horse "Slaughter" is needed as a form of control. If horses become over populated they will die of starvation. Now tell me what is worse, dying of starvation(long slow painful death) or dieng instantly, to feed a human. hmmm not much of a debate now is there.
Also you stated "Americans do not eat horses", well i do not know about you but i know of several Americans that eat horse meat. In fact i would not have a problem with trying it myself. Also this is in the wrong section to post this.

i have to agree with caleb, it has to be done, except im a veggie so wouldnt eat it but i can see why it has to be done. id rather to die instantly then have a long stretched out death, wouldnt you?

Choosing to eat horse meat kind of leads to a religious issue sort of too. I personally won't eat it but Caleb's right.

ok all, im sorry but i need to add some info into your poorly informed openions on horse slaughter. one if people would stop breding grade horses or breding unwanted types of horses, we wouldnt need to worry about that prob. the other thing, that you people are truly unimformed. The horse gets bought at the sale barn it goes out into the kill pins, from there they are put into stock trucks, the very same trailers that are designed for cattle going to the slaughter houses. These trailers are too short and very small for such big animials, they're cramed in there like sardines in a tin can. there not let out untill they get to the kill plant. from there, they're unloaded and sent in, they go into a kill line, they are all in a row, they are shot in the head with a stun gun. All it doe's is knock it out, there, its legs are cut so they can get a leg hook into it. Then there throats are cut. Now, just so you know the horse is still alive because, they need the heart pumping to bleed the horses out. From there who knows when the poor thing is finally dead. But, just sit and think is this really a death you would give to one of your horses, or maybe just think is this a death you would wish upon your self... Yes, I am a true cowboy ranch raised and bred, and i wouldnt send one of my horses who have gevin me all of there love and hard work out here in the hills moveing cows to such a death. and you may ask how i know all this its because i watch them go off at every horse sale and yes montana is one of the biggest slaughter market states for horses so if you ask me (1- people stop breeding horses just to say youv done it before and (2- really wake up and smell the coffee people dont be so ^&*$%# stuped (3- the people of our world need to stop eating such a fantastic aniamal, if you want to eat something eat the cows <hogs or other types, there dum and thats all there good for and if ya all think im lyeing to ya go back to Hard Copy and ask for a copy of the horse slaughter episode that they did. it'll make you wake up to the ugly truth

ThisOldhat and Usenta, i agree that horse slaughter should be put to a stop, or at least the consumption of HORSE meat, i mean its disgusting, and i will sign any petitions to help stop it but its true about the overpopulation of unwanted horses, i think we as horse people need to find a better way or an alternative to horse slaughter, and we need to find it fast

i agree, i think that it needs done. horses jsut can't go on forever. plus they are getting over bred in areas like the mustangs. there is a plant here in illinois that kills horses. but then i don't like it, cause i've seen a lot of healthy horses go there. so i don't know what to think.

ugh we managed sooo long this time without a slaughter thread.
Thisoldhat68 you need to do some UP TO DATE research. The horses are BRAIN DEAD after the first shot, they feel nothing, they know nothing their death is as painless and humane as any you could wish for. Slaughter plants are regularly inspected by independant vets and if they dont meet the standards they are closed or put on probation with further more frequent inspections.
We have agreed time and time again on this board that slaughter is a necessary evil, that while it is not something we would like for our own horses is is NOT cruel in any way and remains the only CURRENT and VIABLE solution to the problems faced by the horses in the western world to date.
We have also agreed before that we do not have the right to judge another culture just because their customs and values are different to our own. If France wants to raise horses for meat thats fine, its racism to condemn a nation for having their own culture. Hindus believe the cow is sacred and holy, yet that does not stop millions of people every day tucking ito a nice juicy steak.
Tolerance and open-mindedness are required here.
