Look at the wormers: "Not for use in horses intended for slaughter." As much as we don't intentd to eat horsemeat, those that do don't want it loaded w/ shots & chemicals, kind of like the anti-biotic cleanbeef furor in the US. So the best thing we or anybody can do is at least keep our horses UTD on shots and worming. The next best thing is to make sure whatever goes on in slaughterhouses is done humanely at least & if possible. The industry is going to have to make the effort at least part way. And old old old slaughterhouse tapes should be retired, I'm sure there's those going around just for inflammation. The live black horse struggling, almost as old as I am.

Tell me what is to be done with all of the unwanted horses... What are your, reasonable, "do-able" solutions? You just can't say ban or stop something without offering another solution to the problem! As it has been said eariler...we have had this and related discussions before...no one has, as of yet, come up with another solution.

Reaper,,,,...first off, how old is the video and which slaughter facility was he associated with? I know various people in the industry, both on PETA side and anti-peta people. What has been found, PETA take one instance MANY MANY years ago and repeat it OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I have PERSONALLY been to the 2 plants here in texas. The horses are very well cared for and I didn't see one horse that didn't drop after the first BOLT. (not hit with a baseball bat, but a legal BOLT that is used on cattle as well). YES< the rare instance that one "MISSES" but again, rare, but PETA and other people jump on that ONE instance and go bizurk with it. YES, in the future there probably will not be slaughter. BUT, The south east states have seen a RISE in abuse and neglected horses over the years. This will continue until the back yard breeding, breed "because" type mentallity gets Curbed! What are we to do with 50,000 horses a year that are slaughtered? If they were wanted, they would have been purchased. Because it only takes a DOLLAR MORE than the kill price, which you can easily find out by asking the weight of the horse, find out what the kill price for the day is, and bid slightly more than that. SIMPLE!! ! YEP!!! Cause killers only get paid by the POUND. Training, showing, etc do not count. Just how much the horse weighs. Our horse meat is shipped overseas. yes it is hard to imagion someone eating a horse, but some people cannot imagion eating a cow, as cows are SACRED where they are. Cats and dogs are also eaten in Asia as well. Shoot, horses were FIRST used as food....they are one of the MOST RECENT domesticated animals. Dogs were taken off the edible chain long before horses ever were!! Again, figure out what to do with 50,000 + unwanted horses a year, and I'll help end slaughter. But until we solve THAT issue, horses will be neglected, abused, and die of starvation as it costs WAY too much to put a horse down. WAY WAY WAY too much.

Good info BW !! thank you for taking the time to type it all. I used to be really against horse or any animal slaughter .. but then you see it from the other side .. as with any issue - even deer hunting, its only when you can picture a world without them it wouldn't be that great. There are reasons for it. its just a shame that we can so easily end the suffering of a pained horse but not another human being. strange world hey.

No most of it is done very humanely. Only a very small minority of cases are inhumane and it is those very few we need to work on eradicating. Quote:

Wwow great info BW!!! i admit, there could be better homes for horses then the meat factory but then we would have about 50,000+horses wandering round,no-one wanting them.

If you say the Bolt is inhumane....then how are we to eat cattle meat? because they are killed the same way. This is CURRENTLY the most humane way and SAFE way for human consumption. Would you eat a hamburger with "buthanasia" laced through it??? Because currently that IS the only choice other than the bolt or bullet through the head.
