Stop Chewing that Wood!

Charlie seems to be a beaver at certain times. First off he is quite the character and does things just to get attention Typical pony lol

If he goes in a stall he immediately starts chewing the wood. I don't think it is because he is lacking anything in his diet because he doesn't do it when he's in the run-in with the other horses. Only when he's in the stall.

He'll chew even if he has hay, been in the stall for a matter of minutes and has other horses in the stalls beside him (there are no grills on the stalls so they can interact quite abit)

He only has to stay in a stall before the farrier comes or if I need him to keep another horse company. But he has figured out that if he chews I'll pay attention to him or go and do some ground work with him (which he loves ).

He used to live in a tie stall before, I have no idea how they delt with his chewing there

Are there any ways to stop him from doing this? He has learned that chewing=attention But at the same time I really don't want my stalls distroyed.

Here's the little character

Is there any way you could contact the place he was at before and see what they did to stop the chewing? Is there a reason he needs to be in a stall? Some horses just don't like being in stalls.

Otherwise...We have used the pelleted chew stop supplement before, I forget what it is called, that worked really well. I know someone who has painted the stall in tobasco sauce, but then again I have also heard of some horses liking the taste. I have heard of people putting cayenne pepper on the the fence rail, so I am sure you could maybe moisten some and put it on the parts of the stall that he tends to chew on.

I don't think his previous owners would have done anything to correct him, just let him chew.

He is really only in the stall for maybe an hour each month, the rest of the time he is out. But you'd be suprised how much damage one pony can do in an hour He is quite enthousiastic about it

I might try the tobasco sauce idea. He has chewed the top board so much it needs to be replaced soon So even if do does like it we can always replace it

There are many products that you can spray on the wood to stop the chewing but many times if you put a salt block in the stall the horse will stop chewing the wood. It's a cheap easy try.

There is abosolutly NO solution for a chewing horse.... I have a border here that chews soooooooo bad! I CANNOT wait for her owner to pull her out, I cannot stand boarding a horse that chews!!!!! I started charging the lady for boards because she was going through them like paper!!

I have tried everything and I mean everything under the sun to stop the wood chewing and somethings work temporarily but nothing is for long periods of time. Temporary solutions are painting the wood with something HOT, Looks like cr.ap since most hot pepper powder is red but thats the only thing that helped a bit.

I have learned that no matter how hard you work them, or how much attention you pay to them or how much food they have, they will still chew.

Make your own hot paste, dont buy the spray etc... from stores its sooo expensive doesnt work near as well and doesnt stay on the wood long and doesnt go very far......

Good luck, chewing is a lifelong habit

Metal strips that are bent to slide over the top of the board.

That sounds ideal...and it is sure to work

I tried dish soap, and it worked for a short time, but ended up soaking into the wood.

The metal strips or channeling would be your best bet.

Could you put a Likit hanger in the stable for him to attack rather than the wood? Find something more interesting then the wood.
