Stole the idea...but what is your favorite book period?

It doesn't have to be horse related, fiction, or fact. Just your favorite book. I am finally finding time to sit down and read again for the first time in several years and I have realized that pretty much everything I have ever read outside of school has been horse related so I am really trying to broaden my horizons and read non-horsey books.

So....list your favorite book. If it is horse related...list a non-horse book that is high ranking on your list as well. If you are like me and have difficulties in the latter category...take notes b/c you will find it valuble later in life when horses aren't your entire world. Please include a brief description about the book. Just the main idea so that I know if it's about fuzzy bunnies in foo-foo land or the death and destruction of some cyber world. Thanks!!

Just a side-note...I've gotten kind of tired of fiction and am looking for more non-fiction if anyone has some recommendations!!

If you like Science Fiction/Fantasy... I'm totally in love with the Robert Jordan series... THE WHEEL OF TIME. I've been re-reading them every year whenever a new book is released. They are great books with an amazing story... they're not ABOUT horses... but the characters have to get around on horseback... so the horses are an important part of the story...

Here are links to a few of the books and a summary... (they're even talking about making a movie out of them!!!)

um, The Memory of Running was good -fiction.
What else.....oh Mao's Last Dancer, which is non-fiction.
*thinking* The Riverside Hospital (something like that) - non-fiction- it's about a hospital in Africa, I think, but it's a bit um gory I guess, and sad.
That's three but oh well. They're good.

What are the first two about? I mean, don't give the story away, just a general idea like you did with the last. Hmmm...headed back to edit my original post.

The Memory of Running is about a man with a mentally disturbed sister who runs away. He bike rides across America to find her.
Mao's Last Dancer is about a young kid living in the slums in China, and he gets the chance to learn ballet and he eventually ends up in America.

It's a toss up between Les Miserables and The Chronicles of Narnia!

Everyone knows what Narnia is about now, but Les Miserables the book, has a very different plot from the movie/musical. The book is so beautiful, after reading the book the musical and movies just seem cheap and shallow. I HATE romances, romantic comedies, romantic anything but the love story in Les Miserables is just so real. Not to mention the amazing themes of redemption, compassion in the face of injustice, and hope in the midst of hopelessness. Take the time to read this book, it will make you a better person.

(But do yourself a favor- get the abridged version! French authors in the mid 1800's were paid by the word!!)

Did you see the movie!!! I read like half the series YEARS ago so it was a nice refresher. Well done and I LOVED the unicorn. Very well trained horse to be ridden bareback w/nothing on it's head besides a horn amidst all that movie making. Looked kind of like an Arab to me. Awesome!!

My favorite book ever is:
The Count Of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

Followed closely by:
Désirée by Annemarie Selinko

As many of the regulars here already know I am a BIG fan of the Harry Potter series.....
also: the DragonRiders of Pern books(Anne Mccaffrey)
and... Piers Anthony Xanth series.
