Mods feel free to move this but I thought it was a little more directed towards breedign than anything else so I put it here. Lindseyanne's stock post the other day got me thinking on the way to the vet yesterday. What if you needed to have an ultrasound or something done at home without stocks? First off if you have ideas on how to build stocks post them I am going to try and attempt to scan my stock plans to post on here but I will at least type out my desciption of it if nothing else. If you have stocks at your place would you post pictures? Here's what got me to thinking. I can't decide if this would be to dangerous or not so I am anxious to hear your opinions. I think it might be a little rsiky but in possibly an emergency situation???? If you have a 2 horse trailer with but*t bars could you load your horse into the trailer to be ultrasounded? You could even have a customized piece of plywood that safely connected to the bar to prevent kicking. This would work ideally with a trailer that had and open front where you could stand and hold the horse at the front and vet could 'safely' work from the back. These were just somethings cruising through my mind.... Ideas, thoughts, opinions, suggestions, greatly appreciated!

I've never needed stocks (thankfully), but a friend of mine has used the horse trailer in the way you described on his vet hating stallion for drawing blood and giving injections.

I am having visions of a horse in stocks. I think this is yet another case of differnt words for the same thing. I think what you are talking about is what we would call a crush.

We do everything without stocks. Ultrasound, Ai, and any thing else that needs done gets done without. But I think they are a good idea, so post your plans! I wouldn't use a trailer..if the horse is upset enough to need stocks, I don't think it would be safe. They move around too much and if the horse totally loses it she could get hurt.

LOL Chester that's HILARIOUS!!! I will try and post my plans. Give me a day or so. Our vet has stainless steel ones I really like. Maybe I can get a picture of them. I am not saying that you woud put a horse in a stock because they are upset I am saying for their safety and our own. I have done multiple things without stocks but it's alot easier with them. Example I had Gabby Caslicks yesterday and there is NO WAY I would do that without stocks!!! Way to dangerous so is biopsies. I just wouldn't risk it. If your horse hauls adequately then standing in the trailer should be no biggie. I just don't have a 2 horse anylonger...

We used to be at a place that has a stock, we never used it, but it was there. At the school, they have just a makeshift stock that is basically two 8' panels that they burried in the ground and support with 4 5" wooden posts, two on each side, then a roundpen gate in front and a butt bar in the back. They welded stops onto the panel so that they can move the butt bar forward or backward. Then, they just took two pieces of plywood and put it on the bottom so that no legs go through the panels. It's rudimentary, but it works and required little welding or supplies, and it is safe.
