Thanks for the suggestion, I'd prefer to leave it in the open as I think it would get too damp under a wrap (it's close to 26C/79F here) if he began sweating, also according to some research I just did, the bacteria which causes mud fever is anaerobic, also Tally is destructive and would remove bandages in about 2 and a half minutes, so best for all if he stays naked.

No, a lot of it isn't scabby any more, there's just a lot of inflammation and a super grumpy "don't touch me there" horse.

This is good evidence that scratches/mud fever/dew poisoning doesn't need any moisture to form

What is this horse's diet? IME, many issues with scratches can be prevented by optimizing the horse's nutrition.

As for treatment once it's there, my favorite recipe is 1 tube Desitin (40% zinc oxide, not 10), 1 tube cortisone cream, and 1 tube Neosporin ointment. Generics are all fine. Mix together, and apply liberally twice a day. When you re-apply, just wipe the old stuff off. No washing. You want to get and keep things dry. The zinc oxide will dry things out while keeping it pliable, there are moisturizers in the Desitin as well, the Neosporin is antibacterial, the cortisone is anti-inflammatory.

If that mix works ok but not great, you can try adding yeast infection cream to the mix.

I am fighting this with my horse too. I have been using warm water and Betadine to lightly scrub, then I blow dry the area. I try to get as much as I can of the scabs off and then I put A&D ointment on. So far it seems to be working. I am keeping her stalled until it clears up. Her pastern was very swollen when I first discovered it. It was also extremely hot, now it is barely warm. The scabs just kind of fall off now. Good luck!

Hi,

My OTTB had it when I got him from the track, I cleaned it with bedadine solution (dry no water) then applied Muck Itch. Worked great.
