Stimulus package... for/against... quick fix, or diversion of blame?

I personally would not mind getting some money back, but think it is a dumb idea and don't think it will do what they are saying it will. If people didn't stimulate the economy at Christmas, they sure won't with tax rebates and I have lost so much money to higher prices that even an $800 rebate wouldn't make much of a dent.
If I do get any, it will go into a CD. Does that make me a bad American. Should I spend it to be patriotic?
Hey, I can actually buy $6 a pound tomatoes.... yeah....
Well, what do you think?
Will it do what they say it will, or is it just wasting more money to put us in deeper dept as a nation?

If you aren't from the US, please feel free to state your opinions too.

It's hard to say if it will work or not but I don't think you are a "bad American" for buying a CD or savings bond with it.

Did they decide on it yet? And I had heard $600

It keeps changing. First it was $800 per individual, then $300, then $200, and now $600?
I really think it should only go to people who can't afford the basics, like food and shelter, not to people to spend for "fun" things, but....

That's how we would like to look at our government... helping the needy... but that wouldn't stimulate the economy. They want us to take the money and blow it on luxuries - merchandise.

They did this in 2001 and IIRC, we pretty much paid the money back in the next year's taxes. So call me a critic, but I can see that happening again. A loan from the government with undisclosed interest!

If everyone were actually planning to splurge on stuff, it might work very temporarily... but I think the majority of people will wind up putting it in savings, investing it or using it to pay down debt. Or, in some cases, they will donate the rebate to charity and deduct it from their taxes in the next year.

It's up to $600 for individuals, up to $1200 for couples, and an additional $300 per child. I believe the cut-off starts around $75k a year for individuals and $150k for couples? And people who make $3000 a year and don't pay taxes will receive $300 rebates (so what, those of us who DO pay taxes will be paying back theirs as well?).

And for kids living at home who fall under the same tax category.

150, 000 is not what I would think of as middle class.
