"Sterile Mare, Always In Heat" What the heck does THAT mean?

I saw an ad in a equine mag for a sterile mare always in heat. "no need to tranqualize or restrain"....can someone explain to me what that means? I'm **guessing** that they will just use her for repeated breedings to collect semen, is that correct? If so.... I dunno, I just seem like that would be a hard job on a mare?

Thoughts? Comments?

Um, thought I might share what collecting is all about. The mare doesnt get "used" by the stallion. The mare is usually around, sometimes has to sniff noses, stand with her backend to the stud, etc and sometimes just stands behind a wall (for protection for the "very happy" stallions. ) The stallion is collected into a container which the vet holds as the stallion jumps on the Dummy Mare.
Sorry if this grosses some people out. (hey, i think thats my arm in the red shirt, I was holding the mare)

Poor thing, what a life to live! I don't why, but that just makes me sad!

Maybe I'm just odd, but thats seems like a stressful life for a mare... Can you imagine PMSing everyday of your life? And breeding all the time? Does that have a pyschological impact (I mean, cause her body will think it needs a foal?)

Okay. That makes much more sense. I still think its a bummer for her to be in heat all the time tho.

Darn! I have a comment for this that applies to the human world, and I can't figure out how to make it forum appropriate. Hate it when that happens...

The first several times we collected our young stallion, someone commented that the tease mare looked so bored she should be reading a book! one of the older guys looked at his wife and said, "Don't even say it, I can read your mind." I almost fell over laughing!

I agree with Kim, being in heat all the time would not be fun!
