I thought polo wraps were for support and protection; that is exactly why I wrap my ankle.

Oh, yup! Sorry, I think I kinda got confused myself! I was refering more to the idea that bandages are thought to support the cannon area ligaments and stuff, but they don't. I'm all with you for support tho Just gets me that people bandage (exercise style) for support! But then since polo bandages go under the fetlock they do provide a little support so I think I just dug myself into a hole .

I know that your intentions were good doing this thread, but vets, instructors and experienced horse people should show the person (in the flesh) how to bandage properly...there are too many ramifications for bandages too tight or to loose.
From what I learned in college....it depends on what kind of polos you use, as to if you used the padding under or not. If you use the thin wraps, then you need the padding, because it doesn't give enought support without. But, if you use the thick fleece wraps, they are thick enought to be supportive without the extra padding.

This is a great thead, but, if you are trying this for the first time, I would most def. suggested having someone there, who knows how to polo wrap to watch over you. If the polos are applied incorrectly, you could do some damage to your horse, by being too tight, or too loose.

The standardbreds have polos or saratoga wraps (similar, but for muddy tracks) and we put Dr. Scholls padding on before we wrap them up.

Everyone here tends to use Sports Medicine Boots instead of polos. I only know two people who use polos. Mind you, my barn is predominantley Western, so that could be why.

The instructions are cool, thanks for taking the time to put them up! When I do stable bandaging, I tend to do method #2. I like the idea of folding the first wrap over in method #1, I should try that out next time!

Yes, I cannont stress that enough to get someone knowledgeable to watch and help you. I just wanted to show different ways to some oldies and maybe get newbies interested in new methods.

No, I think it is more opinionated...I have used polos for over 7 years and NEVER used wraps under them...the only time I use wraps underneath is if I used stable bandages then I put something under them.

Stable wraps for something underneath:

POLOS w/ nothing underneath:
