Yeah, I had no finals today so I'm kind of... post crazy. But this has been nagging at me for a while. What's wrong with steep croups? Like, really steep. Are they good for anything, sport/discipline-wise? (By croup I'm referring to the... slant? from the top of the hip to the tail.... I think that's what I'm referring to... man, I am not helpful.) |

I don't know if it has any sort of advantages or disadvantages, but I've always heard it called 'goose rumped'. I wouldn't say that horse is extreme, though. Not as bad as my mom's horse!!!

your horse's croup looks great. it is long, and the hip is at a decent angle Steep croups usually mean the hip angle is diving down, which restricts the hrose's ability to stretch their legs back. Too flat of a hip, they cannot reach up underneath them. Too short of a croup affects length of stride in the hind end. So yes, it does affect the horse, but it is more related to the hip, but the Look of the croup and the hip have everything to do with each other. It also has to do where the tail head is. The angle and health of the spine is in the croup too...

Agree, your horse is fine A "goose rump" is very often seen in drafts and QH's bred for cutting/speed. The angle makes it easier to push.

I like this one especially. It has a nice overall tie into the loin and the buttocks. It is a very well defined croup. It is short, but the hip angle is a bit steep. But the croup actually maintains itself very well here, showing a very healthy back and muscling to support the conformational steeper angle'd hip

And I'll pick on my own as well. His croup is steeper than I would like to see on a Quarter horse. It does affect his stretch in stride. His back is also a bit longer than I would like to have, which affects his croup angle.

Wow thank you guys, BW especially for all the examples. I know, the horse I posted is fine, Roy was just the best confo pic I have. I just get a lot of people saying that Tuck has a steep croup, and I can see for myself that it is, but I didn;t know what that entailed. Much appreciated! |
