starting to feed sweetlix block...question!!

hi guys! I picked up a Sweetlix Rabon Fly Block (a molasses type block the size of a regular salt like) this morning that is supposed to help reduce the number of larva in manure....kinda gross, I know, but I'm sorry.

I was just wondering, is it okay to just put it out starting today all the time, or is it safer for some reason to only let them lick a little bit at a time?

thanks for any help!

Sounds nice! We need one of those...

If it's the same as a salt block, I dont see why you cant just leave it out.

Cool

Just to let you know....if it is the soft kind...which I think it is.....they will go through it SOO quick. Like 1 1/2 - 2 weeks if not less. And that was with only 2 horses. But it seemed to work. And my old girl really likes them(maybe because they are softer??)

We had one of those out for our horse and between the two of them, it was gone in five days. I didn't seem to make them sick at all.

th72 - what colour is your horse? I ask this as I used this type of field lick for my old horse last summer - he loved it. However he is a grey (white grey) and he licked the lick then groomed himself - what a sticky brown mess he was after two days!!!! lol

I would only put it in for a couple of hours a day tho - my horse just stood licking for all he was worth. If I had left him with it all day it would have lasted three days rather than three weeks! (the one I used was about 6 times the size of a salt lick)

So the Sweetlix blocks have worked well for you? Maybe we should try one.

cool! thanks for the advice so far, everyone. yes, I think it is a softer kind. I'll keep an eye on it to see how quickly they go through it, so maybe I'll then just put it out for a couple hours a day or so. while so far, they havne't been over there ALL the time, one of them has been on it for maybe 60% of the time, since I put it out about 2 hours ago. so I'll keep an eye on it!

my horses are blue roan sabino and black/white tobino, so I'll also watch to see if it makes them all dirty! *lol* what a good point! I never thought of that!

I had a neighbor who said that using that type of lick has reduced the flies to 1/3 of what they were last year!

I also used some pellets in their grain last year that seemed to work well, but they don't need grain this year. so that's why I've got the block.

anyway, thanks again, guys!
