Starting horse undersaddle

I have a five year old gelding I just started working with. I got him in January but I gave him some time to settle in. He is very willing and easy to train, he just does'nt know that much. The person I got him off of did very little with him, just the basics like haltering, leading ect. I wanted to start him undersaddle this year but not until his ground work is up to snuff.

He knows :
-haltering
-leading, left or right side
-walk and trot in hand (sometimes he needs some encouragement to trot)
-picks up all four feet
-not spooky
-blankets
-saddles
-lunges at walk and trot
-moves on the hindquarters
-bath ( he does move around a bit)

He does'nt know
-moveing on the forehand
-cantering on the lunge line
-groudriving
-bridleing

I am going to make sure he has the second list down pat before I start him but did I miss something? What does everyone else expect there young ones to know before they get on them?

Thanks

Establish respect. It has to be clear who is in charge so that this issue will not haunt you later.

Don't use spurs. I learned this the hard way. I agree with John, respect is very important. I would also work on flexing and driving from the ground. there are many great video that can help.

If you want him to move off your leg under saddle try this. So once the saddles on his back, to get him used to turning right with your leg, push into his side with your left stirrup where youd give him the signal under saddle. Vice versa for turning left. I did this with my old QH when i was training him. When i got on him and started doing leg pressure, he had a pretty good idea of what i was asking him. Its just another step in basic training to make under saddle training easier and quicker. And just like everyone else, respect is key in training. Good Luck!
