i am training my thoroughbred dressage and i find really 'scooping' with your bum to get him to collect and come up under himself... supplying helps get his head down and i really love the book: 101 dressage tips it just has a bunch of really great tips for EVERYBODY no matter how high you are in dressage! hope it helps!

how would you start getting a horse to bed at the canter like around your leg?

try trotting uphill.

and add some walk to canter transitions while going uphill too.

it helped build Captain's muscles in his hindlegs!!

Not really - you are talking about "long and low" which is a valuable stretching exercise. We actually had a free walk thread here not terribly long ago, but I can't find it

By engaging the hind end

Bending around your leg at any gate starts, as does everything else, with relaxation and rhythm and engagement. It's a whole process, and there are many incorrect things that can keep a horse from understanding how or being able to bend around your inside leg.

Be very very very careful of using that exercise payday. It tends to lead to having an over-active seat. Yes it will work, but once you start schooling higher level stuff (lets say true extended gaits - not just lengthens) it gets really messy looking, and it's quite alot of work on the riders part. Not to mention, it looks like you're working hard. Remember riding and especially dressage is supposse to be made to look completely effortless. The less you can do the better.
