Starting beet pulp.. how much?

I am going to get some beet pulp today for Fritz, he is going well and maintaining on the senior but I would like to put on a few more pounds then let him maintain on his current diet.

How much do you typically start off with? He is getting senior that already has beet pulp in it (don't ask I forgot the lbs will have to measure when I get home, I have him up to an amount that works good for his maintenance) and I will continue him on that since it has glucosomine (sp?) and the other things he needs. He is currently getting grass hay (don't remember the lb either) and has grazing which he eats fine, we just limit the hay because of Piggy Scout. Instead I supplement with the senior which is easier since we don't have stalls and I can turn him out on the lawn when I get home with a bucket senior while I clean the pasture.

I also read that I don't need to soak unless they are giant pellets (hoping feed store has shredded). He is not a choker and still has good teeth so I think he should with the dry stuff mixed with senior.

Start with about 1c and work up from there until you're happy with his weight. The more you give him, the greater the possibility you might need to start soaking, so just keep an eye on things once you get into the pound+ range (for reference, the shredded I get is about 9c/lb).

Technically you can feed 40% of his forage requirements in bp (so 8lb if he needs 20lb of hay/grass), but I doubt you'll need that much.

Thanks, 1 cup should mix in real well with the amount of senior he gets. If he starts needing over 8lb a day, I think I am going to just start feeding him ice cream... that makes me fat.. or at least feel fat I see Fritz as a Choco-Chip cookie dough type.

You could hit the Dollar store and see if they have 2c measure if you dont have one to sacrifice in the house/ barn. Ive gotten a lot of miles out of the plastic one I use, to scoop the dry shreds, measure water and dole out soaked results.

just another thing is the shreds are very dusty...so I usually just add some hot water a few minutes before feeding, it soaks it up faster, then it eliminates the dust and soaks up the hot water pretty fast, that way it doesn't get sour and soggy

I give 2 pints (1/2 scoop) with warm water 3 times per day. That may be too much. So maybe just 2 pints/day in water?

Well I was just looking for the proper amount to start off with. I will work him slowly up to whatever works for him.

Well he just got his first cup, I took CJ's advice and went the the dollar store instead of marking out yet another line in my scooper. It should make it easier.
