So after taking in so many that have needed help on my own, most likely placing the mare (a lot of you saw that thread, if you have questions why it disappeared or need info PM me) I'm considering starting a rescue. Nothing huge but just maybe a way to take in a few more. Financially, I'm almost at my limit and I can't afford to take in more without some kind of help. I guess my question is this, how do I go about starting a rescue? Can it be done on a small scale with only one or two horses at a time or to get any kind of funding does it have to be bigger? What are some ideas for fundraising? What have others of you done that has helped with the costs associated with rescuing and rehabbing? Have any of you applied for non-profit status and how hard is that process? Thanks for any help.

I would really watch your finances, first of all- make sure you *can* afford to take in those horses. Talk to companies about sponsoring you or donating supplies such as wormers, tack and equipment. Talk to builders who might be able to build fences of barns if you need extra space, in exchange for their logo on your site or in any advertisements you do. Write articles in newspapers or magazines (pst...the online mag I work with is always looking to help you guys out), spreading word about your rescue and encouraging people to donate. Organize taking some of your 'finished' rescues to fairs or special events where you might not only receive donations, but gain recognition, and possibly, place a horse. You can do rescue on large or small scale. Larger scale operations have an easier time acquiring supplies, but you have to be able to work within your capacity. Put flyers out or post on tack bulletin boards that you need volunteers. And I would definitely look into the non-profit status, though I do not have any personal experience with that. Good luck with your ventures!

If you truly want people to donate you have to look into getting a 501 3(c) (i may have gotten those numbers wrong or mixed up) so people can count it as a tax deduction. Here's basic info on forming a nonprofit http://www.nolopress.com/article.cfm...3/111/262/ART/
