Question starting a non-profit

I have a farm on long island and i own alot of rescued horses ( 18 to be exact ). I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me how to set up a non-profit for my rescue, it would make things alot easier!

You need to contact your local Small Business Administration and/or local IRS Office.
They will be able to answer your questions and put you on the right track.

You may need a lawyer to help you set up if you want your 501c3 status (Non-profit & tax deductable)

its a pain in the butt but I will help you. There is a group online that helped us with ours because I lacked the time and brainpower. It cost ALOT to do around 1500 when it was all said and dont. Every state is different but we needed a tax idea and articles of incorperation. Its a pain I will not lie but in the end it really is worth it.

I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you..but I just wanted to say best of luck to you!!
Most certainly, if it were me, I would seek legal advice.

Thanks I'm going to look into the whole legal proccess and see whats involved first though. But if and when we're able to set a non-profit up it would be great to have a web site.

Contact your Secretary of State's office and find out the information on how to register as a non-profit (or not for profit) corporation. You will need a board of directors, bylaws drawn up by an attorney, and financial information. Once registered, you can contact the IRS to get your 501(3)c status. There will be forms to fill out and send in.

Also remember to get an accountant, sure they may seem expensive but they will deal with your finances so well and you won't have to worry Also, do u get tax file numbers? that helps with limiting the tax.
