Baby has been on the longe line a few times and is still sound. I am going to ride her this evening I think for a short one and see how she is.

It has been so hot here that I have not been able to ride much. Which is ok since the extra time off would probably be good for her.

My neighbor has a Standardbred that some women got from this guy that was sending him to the meat market. THe wowmen, not knowing what she was getting herself into gave it to my neighbor. THe neighbor, Ron, has many rescue horses that live happily in his gigantic pastures. He doesn't ride or train any of them, though they all are sweet horses and well mannered... except the Standardbred. He can not get a halter on him and can usally only touch his neck (sometimes). The horse is BEAUTIFUL!!!! But EXTREAMLY skittish and shy. I just started working with him (his name is Ringo ) yesterday......

The horse never raced... he is only 4 or 5 and Ron got him when he was 2 or 3.

I'll have to get some pics

Is a thought, No doubt you will discover the horse is a very fast learner. STB's are so intelligent and not usually as you described this horse.

LD I am going to take some pics of my girl soon to put up. She's so perdy!

Had her feet done last night and the farrier discovered an abcess that had drained out the sole of her foot. So all the time I though she had a tendon strain she was dealling with an abcess. Man do I feel silly but thank goodness she is ok now. Rode her on Monday night and it was fantastic!

Oh I'm so glad your horse is O.K now! Thats great Asfaloth! Now that I think about it and have done a google image search... Ringo is starting to not look like a Standardbred! The guy, Ron, told me he was but wasn't very sure of it. He doesn't know much about breeds and I don't know much about the Standardbred. I am getting pictures on Thursday (tomorow) and will post them here. You guys can decide lol

most are on the shorter side...they average about 15.1 hands. their "trademark" characteristic is their "jug" head...its abnormally large and ugly for their bodies. roman noses are common (Hambo had one). theyre generally not stocky like your QH's...more along the lines of a TB but shorter. bay is the most common color...there are also brown, black (rare to have a true black), chestnut, grey. roans also, but they get registered under their main color (grey roan =grey, brown roan=bay.) this is hard to do...i thought it would be easy because i have spent all my life around them!

Neither Baby or Whiskey had "jug" heads both had very nice profiles. When I worked at the track I saw STB's of many sizes and some were actually very tall. Whiskeyu was only 14.2 hands but Baby is 16h. Both have been mistaken for Quarter horses a few times.
All registered standardbreds are maked either with a freeze brand on the neck, under the mane or a tatoo on the inside of the upper lip so all you need to do is locat the ID and write down the number and go online to http://pathway.ustrotting.com/search/index.cfm
You can use this tool to find out who your horse really is and the USTA can send you all kinds of info on your horses racing history and pedegree.

I have taken Baby on 3 trail rides and she is perfect. Turned out she did not have the strained suspensory we thought she had. It was an abcess! I was having her feet trimmend and the farrier discovered the drain hole, it must have burst through her sole durring the stall rest. I never saw it at all and he just found it when he began to trim her sole. Odd that it burst there rather than the coronary. Since she had an old injury to that tendon there is some swelling in the area and it really did appear to be a tendon strain based on several experienced opinions. Anyway I'm relieved to know she is not in any danger of reinjury to the leg .Now to work on her gaits under saddle. Going to longe with side reins today. I plan on taking some pics of her (finally) so I will post them tonight or tomorrow.

Ugh ok sorry about no pics today. I was in such a hurry to leave to ride yesterday I forgot the camera! Had a fantastic ride though. This lady I was riding with kept looking at Baby and talking about how beautiful she is and asking me lots of questions about STB's and said she wants one. Right now baby is the only STB on the farm and she sure is making people take notice.
