The thing with Amish in general is horses are not their pets, they are just as a car is to us, a machine. However just as some of us make sure to get the oil changed and not beat on our cars so they last, some amish do the same for their horses and again some dont. I do see more nasty thin lame horses from them but not ALL of them. Its a totally different culture that is for sure! Hopefully they get great homes though, and it could happen.

I lived in Amish country for 6 yrs, saw a lot of different horse types and different ways these people treat their animals. Standardbred horses would be used for pulling buggy's, the larger breeds are usually used for field work (not always I agree). Not all Amish take good care of their horses, some leave them standing in fields (not pastures) when they are hurt, they stay until they heal or die. Most of the Amish I knew did not treat their animals badly, just a few; but that few always get seen, thus making us stereotype the Amish (no flaming please).

Klaycock, Cyndi, I agree. As I have said before, you cannot base your opinion of a whole group of people on a couple bad sights!! It's like assuming homeschoolers are lazy, because you know one who is, or assuming WE ALL ARE HORSE BEATERS just because you KNOW A COUPLE. Maybe we should think of ways to educate the amish on herbal ways to treat their horses instead of ranting on them in some forum. The amish really do NOT like going into the outside world. They don't even like their pictures taken, for the love of yuck! Although the teenage amash guy's tricked out buggies are pretty funny to look at... lol.
