Stallions Attributes

I haven't been on these forums very long, but have read alot of the old posts. I have seen alot of questions, and even more opinions, about stallions. I was wondering what you all look at as most important when chosing a stallion to breed to. Many, many of you have stated that if a horse isn't proven then he ain't a good stud. I agree with that, a proven stud is always better to breed to than an unproven one, but I have also seen alot of studs that aren't even broke throw some dang good babies that grew up to prove themselves in what they did. I myself look at conformation and attitude as my most important. If they have that, then I look at what they have done. I have used some that have never been proven but thier parents had been and got some nice colts out of them. I have also used proven studs and ended up with duds. I am very picky about a horses head, I like a nice small head with small ears, I usually won't breed to a horse if they have a bad head. I know people like different things so I thought it would be interesting to see what was most important to you. Also where does color fit in for importance? I don't look at color unless I am trying for a specific colored foal.

First I need to know what I want...do I want a horse that can jump, do dressage or both?!

With my mare I chose both LOL Then I looked at studs that are registered ISR/Oldenburg like my mare. And then I looked at conformation. I wanted to breed to a grey so I looked at the greys also. But I wanted to make sure the stud's temperament was good...so off to the stud farm we went! And I fell in love with DiVinci. A perfect gentleman.

He was everything...a jumper, a dressage horse, great confo, right color and perfect temperament and he had the show record to boot! That's what I look at before I can meet the stud. Then if I'm able to meet the stud I make sure his personality is what I want.
