Okay just a quick question. You see I was wondering what the minimum age would be of a stallion to be put into service with a mare. Like are they infertile at any point and what is the ideal age for mating. I would just like to know for future reference. Sorry I worded it really wrong but i hope you understand what Im asking. Thanks.

Well , it depends on the individual horse, some colts can cover a mare at 6 months old others have to wait till they are a year or older. I have a 7 month old colt ( QH ) that I am keeping a stud and he is nowwhere near being able to cover mares. I have even " checked " to see by feeling around down there and there is nothing there yet ! LOL! Usually around 2-4 years of age is when they can successfully breed. The last colt I gelded was a year old ( QH ) and he was not ready yet to breed. I know that some horses , such as TB's , that are ready earlier then most horses. Is he showng " studdly " behaviours ? Is he trying to be agressive towards geldings ? Does he snort and squeal when there is a mare around ? Does he try to mount a mare ? These are all things to watch for and try to feel around down there to see if the jewels are there yet and that will give you a good idea of if he is ready or not . If you are really concerned then turn him out only with other colts or geldings and have no mare near. |

Sandi's right... it depends on the horse. There are occassional stories about a mare being covered by her foal who is not yet weaned. Those are few and far between (not to mention gross I think, however, that there is a difference between what age the horse *can* breed vs what age the horse *should* breed... Kelly |

have you vet come out and he can take a seman sample from you stallion and see how well his seman count is. that will be able to tell you if he will be able to breed mares. my friend uses her colts at the age of 2. yeah some colts are able to breed mares at a really young age. just talk with you vet he will be great help to you and you will be able to help you out.

Kelly Jean is right. Usually---can--yearling and up. Should---no earlier than 3 years and up. I don't approve of owners using colts at age 2 covering mares just to see what they can do, no matter how good tempered they may be. | |
