Stallion Info & Pics & Pics of Stally's Colts (ages 1 - 4) & Pics of my Mare

Here is some stuff on the stallion that I am thinking about breeding Gypsie to next April.

None of the pictures are very good quality, but they are the best I could get...my camera was messing up.

His registered name is Fast Chance (he is called Leroy). He is sorrel with a star, a snip, and a sock on his near fore. He stands exactly 15 hands. He has good conformation and throws babies that both Rack and do the Running Walk.
He is very calm in the pasture and around his mares, but he isn't ridden because he is a handful when you get him away from his mares and his owner doesn't really ride much anymore. (Leroy can literally 'jump out from under you' is what his owner says, but he is a good horse). He has a slight attitude, but respects people and listens very well to voice commands and body language (that I've witnessed). He was foaled in 1994, so he is 13 years old (same age as my mare, I didn't know that...). He normally throws chestnut, black, or bay foals.

Here he is, Leroy (Fast Chance). He isn't as dark as he looks in these pictures... he is wet, as it has been raining. Also, he has a lot of scrapes and cuts on him because a mare kicked his butt.

Normally he looks a lot better... Also, both his sire and his dam were palomino's, and he came out a sorrel (that's cool).

Here are his two foals from last year. They are both a little over a 1 year old, like Dakota. The shorter one is Little Joe and the taller one is Jack Diamond. Little Joe likes people, but Jack Diamond is still a little standoff-ish... like Leroy, only a little more-so.

Here is Leroy's only (still around) colt from 2003 (he's 4 years old). His name is Sunday Sunshine. He was gelded last year (if I remember correctly) and is very people loving. He loves to be petted and is the first one to come up to the fence when someone comes out. He is a little over 15.1 hands (I'm guessing... based on the fact that he is harder to get on bareback than my girl, who is 15.1 hands)

Here is one of Leroy's two colts from 2004. This is Diamond Ringo, who is 3 years old. Ringo was just gelded a few days ago, because he started acting studdly. He is the boss of the horses in the pasture that he shares with his siblings.

Here are Leroy's last two stud colts. Gem Socks (age 3, a 2004 colt) and Gallant Warrior (age 2, a 2005 colt). Warrior is in front and Gem Socks is in back. Gem Socks was also very standoffish as a foal, but both of them are now very sweet and love attention.

And finally, here is a picture of my mare, Gypsie. She's a 1994 horse, as she is 13 years old, and is a purebred Walker but she isn't registered. She is 15.1 hands and has been bred once, last year. As far as I know, she throws bay foals, but could throw chestnut or black, depending.

So, whatcha think? You've seen the stallion, you've seen his colts, and you've seen my mare... what do you think? I'll try to get better pictures of Leroy sometime when it isn't wet and he isn't hurt.

Like Glenn said, it never hurts to think ahead about a year, does it.

Why do you want to breed her? How can you justify it with the market the way it is today? If you want a baby to raise go to a sale... there was a registered MFT colt that sold at the last local sale for $75. Personally why do you need another horse? What are you going to do when you graduate from High School? What will happen to the horses you own then? Can you really afford to take care of the ones you have now?

I am not trying to be rude I am just trying to make you think... Do you have a game plan for the rest of your life? How are you going to pay the bills and have horses too? What about paying for future education?

What are your priorities? Not saying it is you but I am really concerned at the lack of future planning in todays youth. Have you done the math? What does it cost for 1 year to feed and vet a horse? etc. Can you afford a horse, a car payment and rent? Those are all things you need to think about... life is waiting and what happens is up to you...

Why do you need another horse? If you really want a foal, then why don't you adopt one of the hundreds that are in desperate need of a home? I understand that was want a baby from your mare, but does she actually have something worth passing on, especially with the state of the market? How do you know her personality or physical characteristics will be passed on? Slaughter makes me feel SO sad; naturally, I discourage novice breeders from breeding their grade horses.

The stud is okay, I guess. What would be helpful would be pictures of him and your mare squared up so we can actually see confo. I don't like that he seems to pass on his not-so-desirable temperament...That could possibly be coincidence though. Lots of confo pics of babies, stallion, and mare would be nice, if you can somehow obtain them.

Your mare looks very cute, BTW.

Oh, and I give this speech to everybody who wants to breed conformationally un-excellent and non-amazingly talented stallions and mares. Don't think I'm picking on you alone!

Hi,
I honestly am not too fond of the stud, i personally wouldn't breed to him.
He is another one of those " would make a lovely ridden horse, but not nice enough conformed to improve a mare's conformation and for the foal to be better conformed than both parents."
What do you have planned for another foal? i would concentrate on the filly you already have, and maybe breed later on.

The stud doesn't impress me, to say the least.

For those who missed the corresponding thread...

I just might breed Gypsie next year! UPDATED last post.

Ven, you know what I said about appropriate baby fencing? That goes 10-fold for barbed wire. Litte teeny foals don't know squat, and I'm not sure which is worse- the baby getting torn up in the fence, or the baby skipping through without a scratch, panicing mom, and mom going through- it happens.

I'm sure you've heard it time after time, but how about buying a foal at auction OR rescueing?

I hope none of my post comes across as condescending. But I do hope that some of these good (and well founded) points being made sink in.

It will be hard and may take me a while... The horses aren't caught out much anymore. I can try though.

We've talked about this before and it's still true... your fencing is not safe for babies, and not really safe for the horses you have now if the rest of it is anything like what's in that picture. What if your mare foaled and the baby slipped under the fence? Things like that happen all the time, and even if she didn't freak out and go barreling through the fence the foal could easily die on the other side, missing his colostrum. It happens all the time.

I'm going to say this once and then leave it alone... it would be irresponsible of you to bring another baby into the world with those fences, no aspirations for your personal future and thus no real plans, and no papers again. And that's without even mentioning the state of the market.

What's the issue here? Are your two horses not "good" enough for you? If not, what makes you think a third one born by one of the original two will be?

Ven...please please listen to the advice people are giving you. They're not saying what they are to pick on you or to come down on you.

They are looking out for you and trying to make you see all of the cons to this situation. And there way too many to even think the pros outweigh them in any way.

Breeding Gypsy again isn't in your best interest, I'm sorry. Those reasons have been brought up again and again so I won't go into them again, but I agree with all of them and everything those before me have posted already. There are too many reasons that a huge NO should be sticking out when you think about doing it. I know you love your mare, and love Dakota but how are you going to have time dealing with training Dakota AND working with another youngster?

Just please think about this logically and realise you have two perfectly good horses now.

what do i think?
I think the foals are no more than average quality and the stallion should be gelded. I CERTAINLY do not think your average quality mare should be being bred to him.
