I call all red horses chestnut--but I think (and I could be wrong!) that Bella could be called a sorrel and Doc a chestnut....

Bella Jack and Doc

Its hard to tell...but they (Bella & Doc) really are 2 different colors--Doc is a deep red--while Bella is a more brown red -a flatter color.

Very sweaty in this pic...so Bella looks darker than she really is

sorrel?

Hmm, I always thought that chestnuts were darker, with maybe a more reddish look, while sorrels had a lighter, more copperish/goldenish look. there's this paint at my barn, and I'm pretty sure he's sorrel, because we used to have a chestnut horse, and it was a whole lot more redder looking then the paint, who had an almost goldenish look to him...despite the white patches.
Lol well my sorrel has a red tint and a red mane and tail.
Heres my sorrel:

And here is our chestnut:

There is also a Liver Chestnut which almost looks purple.
wow! I'd love to see that.I love liver chestnuts, the color is unusual especially with flaxen mane & tails w/big blaze and socks very flashy!

They are genetically the same thing.

You send in a hair sample of two horses one called "sorrel" and another called "chestnut" both will come back e (or ee) for Red Factor. Meaning only the red factor is there the horse is homozygous for red (ee).
Add one copy of the cream gene to either one and you get palomino.
Add two copies of the cream gene to either one and you get cremello.
Add the dun gene to either one and you get red dun.

Genetically there isn't a difference.

Here's one of our QH mares. She's a chestnut. If you look at a horse like Sonny Dee Bar or Impressive (attached below Maddy), they're very red. More of an Irish Setter Red. And then there's the liver chestnuts like Coolest (the last stallion).
