| Senior Member+ | Someone smack me and straiten out my thinking! OK. Some of you may know that I've been looking to breed Chicky to a registered Stud this year, and I want a better pedigree not just a back yard registered stud. Well I've been searching hard, and I have a few in mind that I want to look into. There is a stud about 12miles from my house, and I know him. He is very pretty, and there are only a few fualts that he has that I don't like. 1) He has a big block head, and a little nose. Not to bad but it bugs me anyway. 2) I don't like the angle of his pasterns. He sets to far back on them. 3)He has no muscle. Now the pasterns could be due to the fact that he doesn't get his feet done like he should and most times there on the long side. The muscle problem comes from him being locked in his stall 24/7. The lady also wants $400 for the stud fee which isn't to bad, but as far as I know he has no show record or anything like that. I will ask her when I talk to her. I got to look at his pedigree but the only names I reconized was about 6-7 generations back. I have never really seen him move. (I've never seen him out of his stall.) The other thing is shes wants $7 a day for mare care, and thats even if I supply my own feed, hay and take care of my own horse! So basically I know I shouldn't even be considering this stud, but on the other hand I've seen three of his foals. I am totally in love with two of them! There were two that were full brother and sister and there the two I like. the other one I'm not completely fond of. He's cute, but he doesn't catch my attention like the other two do. So somebody tell me I'm being stupid and to go with another stallion! I need to convince myself! Does the price sound worth it? I think the mare care is a little extream, what do you think? I just need opinions. Thanks everyone.

| Senior Member+ | How about I poke you instead? Smacking hurts my hand too, not just you, lol. (poke) Um, I think I'd pass... if you don't like his head, what if the foal ends up with it? Liking two of his foals (from the same dam at that) doesn't mean your foal will be like them. Do you think he'd make a nice foal with Chicky? I don't know if I'd pay $400 for a stud with no show record and breeding that isn't very impressive (not the horse Impressive, impressive as in the adjective). Perhaps you could find something you like better, where you can see more of his offspring, a show record, and recognize the stud's breeding. Just my 2 cents... but really, is there any stopping you?

| Senior Member+ | Ok here goes If you said that you don't need to be told again because it's the truth. NO the price doesn't seem worth it. You are basically paying for someone to continue to keep a poor quality stud instead of a nice gelding.

| Senior Member+ | There are loads of studs out there. I bet you can find one that you actually like for a comparable price. And don't compromise when it comes to pedigree. Breed to what you really really want, within reason of what you can actually afford. For $400 you can find decent blood closer than 6 or 7 gens back. In other words, DON'T DO IT!!!

| Senior Member+ | You said that you didn't want to breed to just any backyard stallion but that's exactly what this guy sounds like...an unkempt, mediocre backyard stallion with a poor pedigree. With just the faults that you listed, I wouldn't want a blockhead passed on to one of my foals. Hey I know you can't ride a head, but if for some reason you had to sell this foal in the future you want to make it as marketable as possible. If his pasterns are low, he could have DSLD, a joint problem that you do NOT want to pass on. And even though he is kept in a stall 24/7, he should have atleast a little bit of natural muscle. If not, you could expect a very poorly muscled foal. So unless you want a blockheaded, unmuscled baby with possible degenerative joint disease and a poor pedigree, I'd definately pass. For $400 you can find a better stud, or buy a nice baby already on the ground.

| Senior Member+ | Thanks everyone. You are all very right. The one fillie out of him is what really has me second guessing myself. She is beautiful, and very nicely put together. I guess the other part is I think he would really look amazing if he would get worked and be outside more. He is at a good weight not to skinny not to fat, and he always has fresh water, good hay, and a clean stall, but he just never gets out, and his feet aren't kept up the way they should be. He has Pluadit lines, buit like I said there like 6 generations back. I do have another stud in mind that is actually owned by one of our members. I just have to send some pictures to her and Chicky's pedigree to be aproved. I haven't totally decided on him yet either though. I would buy another foal, but this one has a little more meaning then just having another baby. In January my 3 year old cousin passed away from cancer. I used to show her pictures of Chicky off my phone all the time and she just LOVED Chicky. She was always asking about Chicky everytime I seen her, and she loved it when I showed her pictures of Chicky's last foal. So I want to breed Chicky again to a nice stallion so it can be registered, and I want to be able to have a great show horse, and I want the foals registered name to be named after my cousin. I want to name the foal A Message From Sarah, or A Message From Junie Bug. (Junie Bug was my cousins nickname.) I wanted a peace of Chicky with a name in honor of Sarah. I know it's not the best reason to breed my mare, but it's something I really want to do, and it really means something to me. Chicky was the one thing Sarah and I cared alot about. Chicky was something that brought us closer together. I wasn't even gonna breed Chicky back again, but I was thinking about how much Sarah loved looking at her pictures and her babies and I just felt I need to do this. I loved both of Chicky's foals, but I had just decided with the horse market the way it is and everything I didn't need to add another. Chicky is a pretty nice horse and has some pretty nice foals, so as long as I watch what I'm breeding her to I'm not adding any more poorly bred horses. ( Well at least I hope not.) I do plan on keeping this foal for a very very long time, as well as my other two and Chicky. I also am gonna start a saving account just for my horses, so that if anything comes up I will have something to fall back on until I can straiten things out. Also my boss said if it ever came down to it he would take my horses for a while and pay all there bills until I can afford them again. (He's rich literally, no joke, and I'm not even close to not being able to keep my horses, it's just a "what if" thing.) So I do know that some day anything could happen and I could have to get rid of my horses but at least I wouldn't have to worry about them not having a good home. I know plenty of people who would take any of them in a heart beat and would give them wonderful homes, but if I ever had to sell Chicky them life wouldn't be worth living for me any more. She is my life.
