Someone please explain colors??

I know what overos, toveros and tobi's are. It is the sabino and splash that have me totally confused. I look at Sinatra and see overo. I have a son of Sato that is a maximal white. He is registered with the jockey club as white and full paint papers as chestnut overo. I have a son of Arctic White that is Chestnut, 4 high whites and what I call splashes of white over his shoulders and hips. None are lethal white carries and the 2 younger boys tested negative for the sabino 1 gene. I am confused.
Thanks

There is a few people on here that know much more than I do about patterns however, your stallion Sinatra...I am very confident he is splash. Splash tends to manifest itself looking like the horse was dipped in a vat of white paint...generally 4 white socks and a white face from the bottom up like your guy. Also note the defined edges unlike th eother two boys you are talking about. I'll have to say hes gorgeous, I've never seen a purebred tb that was splash...I love that color.

Your other two boys definitely look sabino to me. I associate sabino with that freckly kinda almost appy looking pattern your guys exhibit (the white guy you can see it underneath). There is probably a better way to word it but thats just my opinion.

If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question...or asked the question wrong.

You see "overo" because he is a very obvious Splash. A Splash horse looks like (in general) that he was lowered, nose and feet first, into a vat of white paint. Sinatra's whole head white is VERY common in a Splash, even if that's all the white there is. His dam is another example of this.

He is also Sabino, imho, because of how his hind leg white comes up higher in front.

Yep, that's how those registries would do that

TBs don't seem to have the SB1 gene, so that's why they don't test positive for it. Arctic White is a maximally expressed Sabino (at least, if anything else is there, such as Splash, it's obviously hidden).

Do you have a picture of this son? Who's his dam? The 4 high whites could be Sabino or Splash, or both. If it's coming up his shoulders and hips, I'd be more inclined to think Splash is there (as well as possibly Sabino, need pics).

okay.. thanks.....anyone else have more explainations?

So splash is 4 high whites and the bald face with blues eyes?

The chestnut with the 4 high whites and what I think of as a splash of color on his shoulders and hips is sabino?

The maximal white is sabino.

Can sabinos have blue eyes?

Well, yes, and maybe That presentation isn't an uncommon one. But it can be more than that, or less than that, or even nothing but blue eyes.

See my reply above - we were posting at the same time :0

Yes.

It is currently believed that only Splash and Frame (I'm not convinced on the Frame part) cause blue eyes. There are "blue eye genes" that are unrelated to pinto patterns though.

I was gonna mention that, but not sure I wanted to confuse her more.
