Some exercises

Mods I hope this is in the right place, if not can someone please move it?

I ride this warmblood named Ali(short for Alamra, he’s a gelding) a lot sense I help out at my barn. Anyway he is out of shape because he was sick for awhile, he is doing much better. I’m not the only one who rides him, but I want to get a bond with him and I want us both to improve together. Where going to show at some point. What are some exercises I can do to help get him in shape, improve my riding, and we can both enjoy. Just some flat work. I’m going to ask my instructor for some ideas too. After I work I can ride for free and I can pretty much do whatever I want so I want to try something new with Ali. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Btw, we ride English if that makes a lot of difference.

There is a lot of things you can do! It depends on what style you are talking about... Dressage, Jumping, and Western. Building up any horse to get his strength and balance back is the same for everyone.

Just maybe trying to do some transitions... Circles. But slowly build yourself up.

You can go out in one day and run a 25 mile marthon. You have to slowly build up!

Good luck!

backing helps the top line muscle. especially backing up hills or in small circles. also riding through water at a walk and do a lot of extended troting. even more then loping

I would work on serpentines, figure 8,halfturns,circles and bending to supple him up.You can put in cavalettis or groundpoles to give you a little more fun and a mixed up routine.
You can also put up lots of cones and ride around them, while bending.
To help him use his hindquaters correctly you could trot up hills. And to get him soft and responsive,do transitions.

I hate dressage (no offense to anyone) i think it's quite boring...I jump, so you could maybe try some jumping and stuff if you want something new, but its not flatwork which is what yoyu asked for..so for the flats this is what I do: set up cones and a mini bridge, and other things that you would see in a western trail class, and then set yourself a little "maze" in the ring and navigate your horse through it

Thanks 4 the ideas everyone

I just started jumping, its amazing. Dressage doesnt look boring...It takes a lot of concentration and team work between horse and rider. I cant wait to try dressage
