Softening On The Ground???

Does anybody have any other exercises for softening on the ground then just flexing? Before my horse goes into training, my trainer said if would benefit him if he was "soft" to start with. Any suggestions?? Thank You

Has your horse had any under-saddle time or he is going into train to be broke? As for softness in the mouth, are you at all familiar with bitting up?

No prior training, he will be going to get broke. I have seen other people "bit up" but I have never done it myself, so I am not very famililar with it

Okay well bitting up can be quite beneficial, but also VERY harmful if not done correctly. And in regards to what your trainer said, of course it would help if he was soft in the mouth- that is generally something that trainers look to accomplish with a finished horse. How much ground/general training does he have?

He has had quite a bit of ground training, I showed him as a yearling. So he can yeild hindquarters/forequarter, sidepass, lunge line, etc....

I love to do lots of transitions on the lunge line. It really helps them learn how to use the hind end and work from behind!!!
