SO skinny rescue mare...ONE WEEK UPDATE...NEW PICS!!!!

sad story. i got her from a family that got her from their friend because they thought it would be really fun to have a horsey for their 5 year old. they did not know ANY thing about horses, though. they said she is a quarter horse, but she looks thoroughbred to me personally...no papers. she is 16hh!!! i think she might get taller when she gains weight. she is already huge anyways, the people were just throwing her a very small flake of grass (really just straw) hay once a day and nothing else. and riding her regularly. when they brought her to me she she was loaded in a tiny trailer and she couldn't move and the door cut her leg all up because it has splinters everywhere.... AND her eye is all weepy and dripping..and i am not sure why yet...

and i had to laugh a teeeny tinnny bit because it was the only funny thing about the whole situation...they had the fly mask on UPSIDE DOWN literally the ear hole was around her nose and they had the eye parts under throat...oh my she looked SO silly. and they only had one brush for her for all that time and it was a hard bristle brush. i got soooo much dandruffy dead hair from her. wow..she is a mess, but we already love her. she came with the name Molly, but we changed it to Bombai they were really nice people, though, and seemed really concerned when i said she was really, really underweight. i will get her fattened up

It's sad but you do have to give them credit for giving her someone that can give her the care she needs.

absolutely. they really did love her and had NO idea they weren't doing what was best for her. they have already gotten back in touch with me to make sure her leg is all right.

i wish i had a pic of that fly mask it was the darn funniest thing. but, i didn't want to point it out in front of them and make them feel even worse so i kept my mouth shut. when i got her in her stall they took it for me,before i could take a pic.

she is such a calm and sweet horse she didn't even care.

i will definately keep anyone who wants updated on her progress! since she was just on a flake of grass hay i don't want to switch her too fast, but what do you think of this diet? please be honest and help me out...i want to get weight on her!

10lb. of grass/alfalfa high quality hay 2x a day
2 cups of rice bran
2 cups of BOSS
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
1/4 cup of acv
of course mineral block and salt block

and ?

I have heard of some people using stuff called "super gain" on rescues horses..anyone heard of this?

She is definately a QH I'd say a pleasure bred since they tend to have more TB in them for better movement and the like.she looks like one of the invatation only mares I worked with and they were all QH with very little TB. plus im sure once she fills out she will look less Tb-ish

I was told once before to maybe contact AQHA now that everyone is DNA'd maybe geneticlly comparing her to find out who her parents are would be a step in the right direction. but yeah she has the structure to be a Western pleasure kind of horse.

Yep, some good meals, soap and water and maybe some Wonder Dust for her scrapes, lots of TLC and I'm sure she'll come around. The eye I would use some Natural Tears to clean it and then watch it for a few days. I had one do that and it was from the tear duct. She'll be a beauty when you get her going again.
