I second the free choice grass hay and 2 flakes a day of the alfalfa. I see the rice bran and oil is good for fat. Boss instead of flaxseed I guess. But I see no balanced vits and minerals? All of our rescues get probios and electrolytes daily for a few weeks. Dewormed 1/2 of weight of strongid then a week later a full dose of Ivermec. Your getting on track I just didn't see a balanced vit and mineral. Enjoy and good luck! It's alot of work but very rewarding. I have recently rescued 3 babies and its totally awesome to watch em change!

I've never made a mash with rice bran, I've only used regular bran but I assume rice bran would work as well. Anyone? I just add about a scoop of bran and some warm water, enough to make it soupy but not like hey here's your water with some bran in it LOL. I usually add a tablespoon or two of salt.

Also, you can soak the beet pulp (can't remember if I said that already lol) which will help with water intake as well.

I do agree with the post above. The first week I give a dose of safe guard (easier if the horse has a lot of worms) then two weeks later Ivermectin then usually put them on a regular schedule unless they still have worms. You can usually also get a panacur drench from the vet that's small doses given over five days. It's a liquid and fairly cheap.

I'd start her on some kind of pelleted feed to help balance out the nutrition. I'm in love with Equine Sr for putting weight on but it's somewhat pricey. Horseman's edge is working great with my pally rescue and it's only 12%.

Panacur is hard on the gut and can cause irritation. Your already dealing with starved horse which some tend to back off feed so stay away from Panacur. Besides your Powerpack is 50 bucks. Sr feed is awesome but Horseman's edge isn't a choice of mine. I personally have all mine on a RB and for extra lbs I use beet pulp it's very digestable and flaxseed. Theres alot of different ways too add weight whatever is in your budget. I try to keep mine at a low but get all my vits and minerals in one. Mash I don't think she was talking about rice bran mash but sure you can add water and salt to it.

do you have a feed mill near you? I have mine mix mine. its 1500 calories per pound and ground into a powder so its easy to chew. a senior horse with no teeth can survive eating just this grain. around here its 130 for 656 pounds. it has corn, oats vitamines and lots of other stuff I just need to find my last feed mill slip.also if you want something easy thats all fat my go to addative is cool cals. its cheap and smells SUPER good. my picky eater loves it (this is a horse that wont eat certian peleted grains and as a baby he wouldnt even eat his mom's grain. he doesnt like most treats a worse...he hates apples and dont bother handing him a carrot)

Actually Panacur is one of the more 'mild' dewormers. It is in the same class as Gastroguard which is a treatment for ulcers. Panacur will not cure ulcers so don't think I'm saying that but it is gentle on the stomach and can reduce stress. It is also the same thing as safeguard which is what a lot of people will recommend starting a horses worming program out with if you're unsure of their deworming history. I know my vet does and he is one of the top in the state.

Another thing about those pleasure breds, I have had 4 and three of the 4 were hard keepers. So even if they had known to feed her more, they might have had trouble. Some are, some aren't but most older ones can be real big eaters to keep the weight up. I would try some soaked beet pulp. For my older QH, he got 5# senior grain, 3# beet pulp, 1-2 cups BOSS, 2 scoops weight builder, and horsey vitamins in the AM, all but the vitamins at noon and in the evening, total access to good hay, and treats daily (cut up apples, carrots, rolled oat cookies) and he still was hard to keep up. He was floated, wormed, etc. so it was just him, not a health issue. Had 2 out of HRJS that were that way.
