Poor thing!!

I am glad the owners gave her to you.... however, I'm sorry, I don't have much sympathy for them as I just don't see how someone could look at a horse that is showing ALL it's ribs and not have the thought cross their mind that "oh, maybe this horse is underweight" and give it more food It makes me furious every time.

Anyway, best of luck rehabbing her!! She looks like she could be one nice horse when she's all fattened up

i know..it does seem a little weird. any animal pretty much with ribs showing obviously needs to be fed more. i think they may have been a little scared of her, though, because when i got her she was/is in heat and rather pushy. and for someone with NO horse experience they might think she was being dangerous when she is really just being marish. they also let her get away with rubbing her head on you all the time and she is huge so she just knocks me flying. i have been working with her on this, but all will take time. still not a good excuse to not do anything with her. and they said they had their vet out!!!!! and he said that she looked just fine. maybe when they first bought her or maybe the vet was not licensed or...maybe there was no vet i will post more pics of her when she starts looking a little better!
thanks everyone so much!

Poor mare. Her eye may be running because her fly mask wasn't put on properly and was rubbing her eye.

Poor girl! She's going to clean up really nicely. I've started using rice bran and beet pulp on my rescues and wow what a difference from other supplements. She's not too severely malnourished, with those I say build them up slowly. Don't get me wrong I still would with her but no need for bran mash 6 times a day or anything LOL. One of the things I would maybe change is start out with more grass hay and then add a flake of the alfalfa mix in with that until she builds up to 10 lbs. It all depends on how much alfalfa vs grass is in the hay though. I'd keep her on free choice grass or grass hay all day for the first little while so that her gut stays full vs being emptied out quickly with just two feedings. Also, make sure you always feed her largest meal at night, it's better for digestion.

One question, sorry for my ignorance, what is acv?

Thanks...i will do this. they gave me about 6 bales of the grass she was on so i will keep some of that in there with her at all times since she is used to it and then give her the alfalfa/grass at night. my alfalfa/grass ratio is 70 alfalfa to 30 grass so it is pretty high content. AND she is put on pasture for about 2-3 hours a day right now for excercise/grazing.

ACV is apple cider vinegar..don't worry...i couldn't figure it out for the longest time until someone spelled it out and then i was like...of course

thanks for the great advice!

She looks VERY dehydrated to me . Maybe try getting her on some electrolytes?

I'm sure they haven't been worming her either .

Overall she looks very sweet, she'll be a good looking mare once she gains some condition.

you know how there are so many "puppy classes" where you learn the basics about dogs and basically get told that if you don't know you should ASK...there should be pony classes. I wish I had time. I'd offer them $10 a class or free if you adopt a rescue. just basic stuff on how to feed and first aid and what's not acceptable and encourage ppl to get some lessons. that might prevent some of the neglect. kudos on the pretty girl!

To help her rehydrate quickly you could also give her some bran mash with some salt in it if you don't have electrolytes handy.
