Okay, I think I have a pretty good idea of what a horse looks like and how they are standing when they are "parked out." What I don't seem to know, is why people put their horses in that position. Is it typically part of a halter class or showmanship class, or what? I know that is a stupid question, but I couldnt' figure it out! Thanks!

Well, I believe it to typically be a Halter/Showmanship thing for Gaited horses... I personally dont even know what it's all about, I just know how to show it. All my gaited horses have been trained to "Park Out" as they either have been show horses, or are going to be.

Isn't it something to do with tradition of the breed? A parked out horse is easier to mount.

Okay, thanks Cool Time. That's what I figured, but who knows. Any idea why that is part of the criteria?

Whoops, just saw that one post when I replied! I have no idea Miss B, lol, thus why I'm asking the question. But that would make sense. Although I always thought a horse in that position looked awfully strange and unstable....?

Well, it's like asking "why do Quarter horses have to 'square up'?" As far as I know, it's just tradition, and it may have something to do with it making it easier to mount the horse when it's parked out... when I ride a 16+ hand high gaited horse, I like to be able to park em out to get on, it's easier. Plus... I might also add, that only gaited horses, can "REALLY" park out, so it's a specialty of the "gaited" horse selections.

Hannah: Actually, when parked out correctly, the horses have just as good a balance as a horse 'squared'... now if you park them out TOO far, and you try to mount them, you could have a little problem. IE. If you go to the pictures thread that I posted today and look at Romper Parking Out.. that's a good length of Park out to mount at.. he's stable and well balanced. Romper can park out WAY more than that... I just didnt want him to for that picture. Stephanie

I QH saquared up is easier to judge conformation like balance and straight legs. I bet there is a simple answer for parking out.

well, in that case, they're probably checking the flexibilty and ease of movement in the gaited horse... because it's nearly impossible to get a QH to park out and stay balanced (have tried it before) Walkers and other gaited breeds are conformed in a way that allows their body to stretch into what looks like and un-natural position.
