Signs of foaling!

Looks like my mare's gearing up to pop that baby out!

She is bagging up more and more, and her teats are pointing down instead of inwards. The bag does still go down a little bit with exercise, but not as much as it was before. And she's beginning to soften up in the tush... you can poke just to either side of her tail and watch it ripple for about three inches. Her tail is getting soft, too, easy to wring around and play with. She's also beginning to relax a bit in the vulva.

No wax or anything, though, and it doesn't seem like the foal's changed position (still bulging). But the softness is a new and major change! Very cool. I just can't wait to see this baby!

She's not due until the 24th, so technically she has around 27 days left. When I called the stallion owner's wife to update her, she was surprised. She said surely she had at least a week or so left. Let's hope! I'd like to have a chance to pay the vet bills for my dog before she goes and generates more of them!

Limmerick, this is your fault. You were the one who started talking about how it would be "safe" for her to have it now. BAH!

Boyfriend's mom (who was a vet tech forever and knows more about horses than I could ever hope to and doesn't mind sharing her information) now thinks I'm nuts. She's finally figured that out...

She says that she hopes she doesn't have it soon, as it would be too early. I'm not so sure... horses generally go somewhere between 320 and 360, and I calculated Page's due date using 340. She is at day 313 right now.

I could easily be imagining things, but Page went from more or less firm (although Kari -- my boyfriend's mom -- had commented that she was beginning to lose muscle tone) to WHOOOSH JELLY! -- in the space of two or three days. The relaxation of the vulva is new to that time period too. Seeing such drastic change in such a small amount of time is what has me thinking that she'll be early, if not necessarily next week. She said that she will be soft to the hip before she foals, and she isn't right now... but she's 1/3 of the way there... in the space of three days on the outside. So in my tiny little brain, six more days would take her to the hip!

mutrok, I was thinking about that as I examined her today. Weird how forum life (and the lives of others) come into mind without warning! I feel as if I know some of you personally. Hah.

I'm excited to see yours (I love the breed!) but I'm MORE excited to see mine! See yah at the finish line!

and the race is on to see who wins first Mutrok or Jenje! Do you wanna know Kriz is due the 25th! LOL However JMO but mares will tend to soften up and get squsihy up to two weeks before foaling. Tomorrow everything maybe hard again. At least my mares do.... Good luck to you both Jenje I can't remember what's the breeding on your baby?
