Ok I did this for the last show and it looked great but he has a really fine mane so he kept shaking it out and i'd have to redo it. How do you get it to stay?

Alternatively, you might try banding it, just to show that you have taken the time to do something with it and that it is not long for for sheer lack of motivation to "properly" groom. I would personally love to se more horses shown with natural length manes.

Try hair spray, or coating with gel after it's done even a bobby-pin here or there will help it stay in a bit better. if you use hair products, just remember to wash out shortly after the show or else they get kinda gross lol

LOL, for gaming shows you can do a "net" on their mane.. I know I'm no help.

I show my reiners HUS as well so I just do a french braid for the english classes. If your horse has a thin mane it's possible to just do very small and numerous hunter braids by folding each section under more than once. If each section is small enough this can actually look very nice but...it's an awful lot of work especially at a multiple day show where you'll have to redo it every day.

The length of a horse mane shouldn't have any bearing on how it places in a class but unfortunately, with most judges it, does.

Well my horse shows roping, reining, WCH and then all the english and western classes and speed events. We band his mane for everything but the roping and the reining. He won the halter class at the Colorado State Fair in both APHA Aged geldings and APHA amateur geldings. They knew my horse was a performance horse because it is the same judges doing all the classes. So they understand (most of the time ) that they are judging a performance horse and expect the mane to be natural length. but does need to be banded or something so they can see the neck in halter and showmanship.

Does anyone have pictures of a long mane banded? Is that pretty hard to do with a long mane? I have done it with a short mane but it would seem much more difficult with a long one. I think I will try the braiding thing for our first show, just to see how that works.

I agree with Acme Acres.....show them your horse not their mane....

I have a Quarter horse and left her mane long...however, I show open shows....she usually always is first or second in halter and we do well in western.

I would like to show AQHA show eventually and I will leave her mane long...at least I would try it.

Pleasure horse with a long, banded mane at the 2006 AQHA World Show:

I have never banded a long mane myself since I show reiners. One of them has thick mane that will eventually reach his knees (almost there! lol) and the other one has a thin mane that won't grow anymore, but I wouldn't like his super long anyway. It'd look to stringy, lol.

I'd probably french braid their manes myself if I showed in other events, maybe band Player's (the one without the freakishly long hair).
