Post Show names vs Reg'd names vs Barn names???

I see lots of posts about people trying to think of show names... Are these registered or unregistered horses? I can see why you'd want to think of a show name for an unregistered horse, but if he/she is registered... wouldn't you use the reg'd name in competition? Just an interesting subject, I wondered if these were horses with reg'd names that owners don't like, or unregistered horses.

Lore asked something similar below, in "Please explain", and I know for a show that registry doesn't matter, you can use any name you want. I was just thinking that most people with reg'd horses normally use the reg'd name in any kind of competition intentionally, because it often reflects the horse's pedigree.

I agree ridegrrl.
If you show a registered horse at it's breed show you MUST show it under it's registered name so they are out of luck if they don't like the name. They can see if they can apply for a name change...some breeds will allow it if the horse has no offspring, won titles or points yet. Some registries do not.

As for the open all breed saddle club shows around here they can show the horse under any name they choose. Although most owners will use the name the horse is registered under.
I assume they are talking about the same type of shows where they are.

I'm not sure about the other folks on this forum, but when I'm looking for a show name, I'm trying to find a name to register my babies under. For example, if I choose the "show name" The Midnight Blues, it also becomes that horse's registered name. From there, I choose a "barn name". Sometimes it's part of the registered name, sometimes not. One of my broodmares is registered, and was shown, under the name Miss Noblesque. I shortened her registered name to Nolie for a barn name. My two-year old filly is registered and shown under the name Justa Bit Wicked. Her barn name is Sabrina. Another of my two-year olds is registered and shown under the name of Nuthin Up My Sleeves. Her barn name is Willow. Believe it or not, choosing a registered name can end up being EXTREMELY important. In a large crowd of horses, which ones do you remember best? The ones that have names that come across a Public Address system as being memorable, funny, cute, etc. Judges, prospective breeders, prospective buyers and prospective students are all going to be remembering you and your horses, too. That can mean the difference between a little money and a LOT of money. So when someone asks, "What's in a name?", you can tell them -- EVERYTHING!

Accually, usually you have some say in the name you want for registered horses. You usually have to include the moms and dad's a i believe, or atleast one of them. You usually will be able to choose a name or two, and if they're already taken or something, the registration people will choose one for you.

When I look for a show name... Im looking for a nice name to call them at shows as my guys arent registered... If they were I would use the registered name. I just like to make my horses show names so that in the ring the annonucer doenst say like... "so and so riding Rusty, or Bobby or Tommy" or something like that. It just makes you feel a little bit more special to have a nice name like "Idol Girl" (Jeda's show name ) to use...
