Show feed

Hey everyone!
I have a four year old mare on sweet feed (1/2 pound) once a day. I know some people don't like using sweet feed but my BO seems 2 think it's ok.
Im big on gaming and plan 2 start western pleasure this summer and im thinking of putting her on a new feed. She also gets hay twice a day, and during the spring, grass 24/7. Id love any suggestions or info.
Thanx!

I am in love with Farnam Platform type: Pleasure. If your horse is loped or cantered more than 3 miles a day then you would want the type: Performance.
Thats what my horse eats. Has all minerals and joints supplements already in. I feed 1/2 during the winter and 1lb during the summer. 1 flake of hay in the morning and 1 at night. He sometimes gets 2-4 hours of turnout.

for the best look and performance you will need a nutrient dense feed

if your BO is set on her sweet feed keep it at 1/2lb and add in a good ration balancer

If your horse is maintaining weight on 1/2 lb of sweet feed, then that means that you don't need a feed that's going to add in a lot of calories.

This means that you need to look for something that will be fed at 2 lbs or less per day within your horse's performance class.

Pretty much all that you're going to find in that criteria is a ration balancer.

I don't have the feeding directions for Platform Performance in front of me, but I do know for a fact that what you've listed doesn't fall into what is required. It doesn't matter how good a feed is, if you're not feeding it correctly, you're not getting the benefits from it.

How large are your flakes of hay? Unless they're quite large, that seems quite insufficient.

I use Omolene 200 on my show horses. It works great! Oh, and I show miniatures in halter and driving.. So they have pretty hard workouts sometimes.

And how much grain do you think he needs?? He has filled out and gained weight in the ten months he's been with me. Why would that seem insufficient?? They are about 4 inches across... medium size... I won't even try to give a lb amount for the simple fact as Im not sure. If he doesn't get turned out or it is below freezing... he gets 2 flakes at night.

Nutrition isn't just about calories. It's about the 'nutrition' that's being provided along with those calories.

If he only needs 1 lb of feed, then he needs a feed that is nutritionally designed to be fed at one lb.

L & R Farms

I agree that you need to be feeding a good feed. Depending on what you are wanting to do with your horse. If you can give me more information, maybe I can be of more help. We operate a feed store www.angelfire.com/trek/landrfarms . I think that for about any horse, the Kent Protein/Mineral tubs are great to use. You can take a look at the sizes and prices at our site. If you need more information on them let me know.
